Is it normal to have a slight bit of resistance getting into 2nd gear when the engine/transmission is cold?
Once the engine/trans is warm it clicks right into gear as smooth as silk.

Given your description, yes, very common and often discussed here at length. You can search the forum to read more, or wait a bit and see if the Forums Nazi pops up to guide the way.

I know I am risking the wrath of the Forum Nazi, but sometimes the information you search for is stale. Sometimes there are new members that have new opinions or the data has changed and there are updated thoughts.

This was previously discussed here, where you can find the answer to your question.

The search lets us see what has already been posted, so the same things don't get posted over and over again. You can often find answers to your questions that way, without needing any update. If you've already done a search and looked in the FAQ, and you can't find answers to your questions or you think the answer may have changed since it was posted, then just say so and we'll all be happy to help out.

The soup here is never stale. But you only get soup if you do a search first. It's easy; just click on that word "search" that you can find at the top of your screen. Try it; you'll like it - just like my soup.

I wondered that about my 2001. It even grinds a bit going into second when its cold. I'm In pennsylvania. As its warming up, the problem is going away. After the car is warm.. it shifts fine. I heard from several others that this is pretty much normal.. and as the car gets more miles on it, it gets better and better.

I'm having a steering issue now.. Since new the steering is stiff and does not return to center from a right turn. The Acura regional rep is getting involved, and the matter will be looked at when the car has about 3,500 miles on it; the tech said for it to loosen up a bit. Its not bad, but I don't think it should be this way. How is yours?

Thanks

I think I'd disagree with the comment about the problem going away after you get some miles on it. Mine is at 97K with similar symptoms. I'm not crazy about risking damage so for the first 10 minutes, I usually just skip 2nd and go straight to 3rd. I've also found that downshifting 3rd to 2nd doesn't seem to have the same problem, so if you feel you just have to be in 2nd, a 1-3-2 shift might do the trick

The owner of my 01 #149 posted a while back about a grinding 2nd gear at 300 miles. Davis Acura put a new tranny in it. I bought it at 1,600 miles. It now has 2,000 miles and seems fine. One thing I DO notice is a definite kick when accelerating heavily into 2nd. The rpms drop quick, the nose dips then bounces back up as the tranny kicks hard and there is a lot of power going into second. All other gears are pretty smooth under heavy acceleration but still give quite a kick as you go into each gear. Anyone else feel this?

No matter how cold, I can always shift from 1st to 2nd without grinding by pausing in neutral for just a moment before pulling it down into second.

Where does this NSX recommendation come from?

It was recommended on the e-mail lists by Woodwork, who is on this forum and who is Acura Division's technical expert on the NSX. You can read the full text in the clutch section of the FAQ here, in the part where it says, "Why Do I Get A "Shudder" From My Clutch?"

BTW, there is information in the FAQ (at the very end of the section about the transmission about a possible solution for trouble getting into gear when the transmission is cold. I don't know if this will help but it's worth taking a look at.

Actually, my experience is the reverse .. if I apply just a little pressure and 'wait' for it to engage, that's when I get the worst grinds... which I suspect is consistent with the RPMs dropping off significantly, so the earlier suggestion of blipping the throttle may make sense and I'll try it

You are correct, that if you apply pressure, it grinds the worst. When I say pause in neutral, I mean remove pressure and let it sit in neutral for a momoent, then pull it the rest of the way into second. Almost like you would if you double-clutched.. but I don't do that. Try it.. see if it helps.
