All search engines are slightly different in the algorithims they use for placement. Google's page rank is based on the number of incoming links you have to your web site from others.

Google's pagerank is based on a lot more than that, though that is one of the scoring criteria used. Look up googlebombing to see how misuse of that scoring method can really move someone up in rank.
