I just received a 1991 NSX engine with under 15,000 that I bought up North and as you can see in the picture, the outside is heavily rusted. I took the engine to my mechanic and he told me that there is a strong posibility that at least one of the cylinders is rusted from moisture getting in to the cylinder from an open exhaust valve. This engine was not prepared for storage, and one of the Catalitic converters was removed some time ago. My mechanic things that the engine is probably frozen and he does'nt want to turn it because he things that turnning it will only cause more damage to the engine. What do you guys think ??

Was it stored outside uncovered? Ports open? If so looking at the pictures water may have entered the engine.

From the looks of it, a total rebuild is in order. I hope you bought it for peanuts (literally); because, it will probably cost out the wazoo to get it in running condition.

Is that the flywheel?

No, that is a brake rotor.....bet you can't guess which one. :p

Hmmm, why would one cat be removed vs both being removed?

Me thinks you be whacked out of your noggin for purchasing an engine like this, unless you got it for only a song.

Best thing you can do is pull the oil pan and inspect the bottom end(pull some rod caps and inspect the bearings). also pull the spark plugs and use a borescope to see the condition of the cylinders(rust or no rust?). Also pull the valve covers a check the condition of the cams.

This should give you a better Idea of the condition of the engine. Good luck.;)
