I have been running on straight pipe for a few years now (5yrs) and have been lucky enough not have been stop by the cops, but wanted to know if I should go back to having the cat. back on. It is great to have it off since the engin is more responsive woithout it, especially on the track. but I alway am concern in the back of my mind with the cops out there. If ever stop by the cops about that what are their options. Thanks for the feedback.

They can fine you for an improper exhaust as well as possible impound. The HTA is pretty open to interpretation and discretion of the officer. There's a guy here in Ottawa who's well known for throwing the book at every modified car he sees. Usually its a fine ($250) plus a 24 hr fix it order. Mind you, he 'tests' exhausts by poking a stick into the tail pipe and seeing how far it goes. Thats hard to do in the nsx with its transverse-mounted exhaust and its bends. Still, if they think its too loud, too smelly, its their discretion to do what they want to you.

Yes, you should. Not only to reduce the noise from your car, but also to add less pollution to the air.

(Also, unless your car has forced induction modifications, the straight pipes won't give you any significant performance advantage. But you should do it because you want to do the right thing, by not adding to your air pollution.)

Peter, FYI (taken from HTA:
75. (1) Every motor vehicle or motor assisted bicycle shall be equipped with a muffler in good working order and in constant operation to prevent excessive or unusual noise and excessive smoke, and no person shall use a muffler cut-out, straight exhaust, gutted muffler, hollywood muffler, by-pass or similar device upon a motor vehicle or motor assisted bicycle. R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8, s. 75 (1).
