Royal Purple Oil

I checked out their website. I would have liked to have seen more detailed technical info. But reviewing what data they had, most of their comparisons showing improved horsepower were with their racing oils, which are lower viscosities. Thinner oil has less friction, but also less protection. And a racing oil only has to last 500 miles or a few hours, depending on how you want to look at it. Either way, racing oils are not good oils for street car use. They don't require detergents and are not manufactured for long term use. Now this doesn't mean they don't make a good product, but I would need to see more info in a comparison test to be convinced of any superiority. Specifically something like their 5W-30 for street use compared with a Valvoline synthetic 5W-30 and a Mobil 1 5W-30. Their website didn't indicate that their test results came from a like for like comparison and they never identified exactly what the competitor's product was.

Sincerely, A skeptic of any product that devotes more pages to "testimonials" than it does to "technical".

Lud, I know you were looking for the other Mark, but we did the experiments together which means- the other Mark put RP 75-90 Max Gear oil in both of his currently running cars, and I drained the s--- out as it seemed to be eating up his gear box(s).
Interesting point- MJ decided to try this gear oil after speaking to an engineer at RP over the phone or by e-mail. He assured MJ of the safety of this application for the 75-90 which I questioned to death. When we were at SEMA a few months later, I asked the *engineer* on duty at the RP booth about using Gear Max 75-90 in Honda trannies and he reccomended I NOT do that. These differing stories happen so often to me, that I rarely take advise from an engineer I don't know well. It's like they hang up the phone and have no obligation for what they said, though I suppose you could sue for damges if you ruined an expensive part because of bad advise. Most websites I have visited for technical advise are covered in Disclaimers for bad info though.

FWIW...when Royal Purple came out a while ago, I used the 10w30 in the engine...works fine...no problems.

But as for the gear oil...I read the specs, and compared it to Honda's publishes specs for the manual tranny, and they didn't jive; something about MIL-SPEC this or that and hypoid gears, etc... Anyhow, I also asked a RP rep at the time (was two years ago), and they said not to use it in the NSX manual tranny...
