Ridiculous Dealership.... advice..

We CA we pay oil disposal fees/taxes whenever we have the oil changed, above labor and material for the job. Is this standard in other states?

Incidentally, while we're discussing oil changes...

One thing I find surprising is the refusal of some Honda dealers to work on Acuras. I would expect that any Honda dealer would be willing to do an oil change on any car, especially an Acura, if the owner were willing to provide the oil filter. I would expect this to be even more true in markets in which there is no Acura dealer. But it isn't.

On the subject of Honda dealers and oil changes... ;)

I generally buy my filters from the local honda dealer, as my nearest Acura dealer is 30-40 minutes away. The first couple of times I bought them there, they had to order them. Since then, they've always had them in stock. I wonder if one of the newer Honda models uses the same filter (new V6 accord maybe?) Either that or maybe they just like my business and keep them in stock for me. :)

I haven't asked them if they would do an oil change for me, as I generally do my own.

Thanks all for the replies!

I called Acura Client Services in Torrance CA and after talking to a customer service representative, she recommended that I write a formal letter to the corporate office. She first told me to go back to the dealership to discuss the matters but then after lots of "talking":) she began to really see my point. I told her that we started quite a lengthy thread regarding this issue and she said I should send part or all of this with my letter.

I didn't send people's names or their messages. I sent a very well written letter explaining my concerns and about 20 different dealership prices for oil changes (I mentioned they were approx.)

I'll let you all know what comes about with all this. If anything.... I can at least sleep better at night now that I've sent the letter.

Thanks again all! This is a wonderful forum.

I believe it is at my dealer (At least for waste disposal) but it is included in the total oil change price.

Not to get too far off topic, but have you seen the cost for an oil change on an Enzo....$780.00!!! And you have to use their $59.00/litre oil or they wont warrantee the engine. Makes the NSX's $99.00 oil change a bargain.

Just more useless trivia.

This is a good question. I also have wondered how many NSX parts are also used in Honda car. When I had a Porsche I ordered many parts for the Porsche using VW or Audi part numbers. This made the exact same parts about half the cost.

There is a follow up to the $59/ltr oil that Ferrari requires to maintain warranty coverage. It is against the law for any auto manufacturer to require specific OEM equipment or they will void the warranty. I can't recall the name of the legislation, but in essence, as long as you use the appropriate products, you will not lose warranty coverage just because it didn't come from the OEM.

Nevertheless, if you're paying $650k (MSRP, no less), you probably have no problem paying that kind of cake for the oil change. Incidentally, did you see in the same article that they went through all 4 brake pads and rotors in 1200 miles, and the replacement cost was roughly $28,000? Sure, it was on the track, but WOW!

You're referring to the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. You can read more about it here, on the website for SEMA (the Specialty Equipment Market Association).

Just FYI almost every place that does oil changes loses money doing them. They are more a convenience for the customer than anything else. Especially at a dealership, by the time you pay the service writer, the tech and the guy that washes the car that $16-$18 in gross profit goes away fast. At $39.95 I charged around a whopping $15 for labor. Next time you complain about your $40-$50 dollar oil change think about how much it actually cost to do it.

This is all fine. $40 for an oil change is not entirely outrageous. $10 for the filter, $10 for the oil (If you use dino oil like the dealers do) and 10-15 minutes to do the actual work (At least that is how long it take me in my garage) and I think $40 is perfectly acceptable. However, when a dealer says the cost $100 because it is an NSX that uses special tools, has a unique mid engine design and what not, that is outrageous.

Had my oil changed by Hendrick Acura here in Charlotte for about $45, including tax. I agree with everyone else, $100 for an oil change is absurd! But, now that I realize how easy it is, I will probably change the oil myself.:D
