my climate control unit is working intermittently. is it difficult to replace the unit? is it just a matter of unplugging and replugging some wires?

Do you want to sell your broken one? it comes out with four phillips screws once the dash is removed. The molex plug on the back is removed by pushing in on the clip.

I replaced my climate control unit a few weeks ago. Be careful when you take the vent out, there are two metal clips underneath it. Just be patient if you don't want to scratch the panel. Do a search on this forum, I remember there are some discussion about this.

You can save some major cash doing it yourself. I spent a ton of cash having mine done at the dealer. Now my A/C is not working again after the third freon charge. Good luck.

The unit is very easy to remove after you do it the first time. Having had control problems myself, I have had mine out about 4 times. My record now is about 10 minutes to have the thing in my hand. Something to watch for....I found that it is easier to remove the center console plastic rather than let it hang and risk scratching something. The screws that hold the shift boot to the console panel can be tough if you don't have a short screwdriver. Mine is a 92, so others may be different. Good luck, take your time, and it'll be a piece of cake.

Just another shortcoming of the Service Manual. I took out the console trim, leaving the boot around the gearshift. Looking closer, I saw that if you carefully pry down the chrome ring at the top of the boot, then unscrew the shift knob, you can just pull the boot up and out with the trim, with no scratched knuckles.

A new control head is expensive. The dealer cited a cost for the unit around $650, but I imagine that price can be beaten. However, I had a shop that repairs electronic equipment check it out. They replaced some capacitors for $100 plus tax. Unit works great now. It took a little while to get it fixed, but I thought it was worth the wait (2 weeks).

Good luck!

Nick,

If you need help removing the console and the CCU unit, give me a call. I have removed my console 4 times now for stereo work. I can do it pretty easily now.
