I took out the carpet from the trunk and it still smells bad. All that is there is the aluminum and the wires. I don't want to put the new peice in if it will still smell bad.

Is there anything I can do to further remove the smell?

Some friends suggested wiping it down with some clorox.

Any thoughts?

help!

Does it smell kinda musty? Mine was like that, like it had sat in the water or something. I pulled all the carpet when I put in the nitrous setup, and within a week the smell had dissipated. I also left it open while in the garage at night.

No.. i left a bag of frozen chicken in it for a couple of nights... when I opened it, i nearly puked. It smells disgusting. It is not as bad as it used to be, but I can still smell it.

I thought it would just be in the carpet, but i can still smell it without the carpet.. though not near as much.

I just want it to be perfect again.

The stuff that you spray into air conditioner inlets does an amazing job on getting rid of funky musty odors. The air coming out of my '96 Tortoise air conditioner was nasty (serious mold smell) until I used this stuff. Cured!!! (everyone in the house is trained to dry the system out before they turn off the car now) I would give that a try. Spray some in, close the trunk for a couple of hours and repeat. I bet it would work.
The smell might come back eventually because you have not gotten rid of the dried blood and other nastiness, but a repeat applition would reset the smell clock.

I got it at Autozone. Automotive Air Conditioner PureAir, made by ID Interdynamics. I don't remember what it cost, but it was not expensive. Car dealers all sell the same stuff as well.

I would try the white vinegar route, I don't think that a box of baking soda in the trunk will help;-)

Your best bet would be a pet odor removal spray from a pet store. I had an issue in my 996 (water from a backed up air conditioning pipe....yuck!!!) and there was this pump liquid spray for cat pee that rocked and fixed it awesome.
Aaron.
