Hello- I read through the FAQ on this subject (5 spd. manual) and seems it's a little split up on people that use this and those that use the normal stuff...trying to get an idea of what I might need before the hot summer.

Any feedback- I've used redling in my other cars, but this will be the first time changing in the tranny?

One last thing, maybe a dumb question but how would the pan get refilled after draining it? I've always wondered..thanks!

I've used Redline MTL, Honda fluid, and synthetic motor oil, and haven't noticed any difference among them. I use the Honda fluid now.

I would say that, if you're not experiencing any problems in shifting, it probably doesn't matter which one you use, but I generally stick to the Honda stuff unless I feel there is some reason to do otherwise. Just my O.

Look in the service manual. You'll need one if you're going to do the work on your own car. You can buy one here. The maintenance schedule in the service manual shows the page cross-references for each of the maintenance procedures.

I used to have a slight grind when shifting into third at redline. I used the redline MTL now its shifts just fine. Can't really say I have a preference other than what I experienced.

FYI, Comptech uses Redline Synthetic in their cars. In my previous NSX, the gearbox used to have a notchy feel when I shifted gears with OEM fluid in there. I switched to Redline MT-90 Fluid (preferable in warmer weather) and the notchy shifts were reduced considerably. I recently installed a new 6-Spd trans in my 1991 NSX, and I use Redline MT-90 fluid in it, and will continue to do so. Results speak for themselves, and Redline Fluid did wonders for my previous NSX's trans. And did I mention Comptech uses the stuff too...

I say stick with the Honda MTL. There are special additives in the fluid to protect the gears and stuff.

Keep the fluid changed every 10,000 miles and you will be fine.

Do not waste your money on Redline.

According to the maintenance schedule in the owner's manual, it should be changed every 30,000 miles or two years, whichever comes first.

My Service Manager at the Acura Dealership I get my NSX serviced at recommended Redline when I had my Tranny flushed. I trust his him totally says most all NSXs they work on get that in the Tranny unless the customer wants the Honda brand. I did not notice any difference with Redline in the NSX but other cars I owned I did notice smoother engagement and shifting JMO.

I think I bought 5 but I don't remember for sure.

Brian,
I imagine my car had the original trans oil.
No way of knowing for sure.

3 qts per the service manual, and you should have just a little left over.

Yeah, and the service manual also recommends changing the oil every 6 months or 7500 miles.

You must get a hard-on when someone post an opinion!

The owner's manual and the service manual were written with input from the engineers who designed the NSX. They know how often various systems and fluids require maintenance, because they've done all the analysis of degradation of components and materials from wear and from time. You can ignore their advice if you want, but they are the experts.

There's no need for your snide personal insults.
