Hi,

The wife and I are planing a trip in November to Maui. I've been doing some research on line and there seem to be quite a few places that fit our criteria, however, I can't decide. I've never been to Maui so would like some advice for hotels to stay without breaking the piggy bank, and convenient to local activities. Nothing major, hiking, snorkling, chill on the beach type of activity.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I went 5 years ago on my honeymoon. I stayed at the Fairmont Kai Lani and it was excellent. The Four Seasons was next door and that hotel seemed even nicer.Went to dinner there a few nights.

I stayed at the Four Seasons in Maui about 6-7 years ago and back then it was simply amazing. The service, views, etc. was just great. However, if you need a more kid friendly place the Grand Wailea next door looked awesome. They have a huge pool w/ water slides everywhere, caves, etc. Looked really fun.

Good luck............

I'd recommend the recently remodeled Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua if it wasn't for the "without breaking the piggy bank" comment. I'll be staying there in just a couple of weeks and I'm really looking forward to seeing all of the changes.

The new Kapalua Adventure Center that opened up nearby has awesome hiking trails (I hiked the Maunalei Arboretum Trail at the end of last year) and I look forward to trying the new zip lines.

The Ritz is nice if you can get on the Club floor. Otherwise its not spectacular.

The Four Seasons is probably the best on the island.

I'm leaving for the Grand Wailea this Sunday. Spent a week a the Four Seasons back in the 90's. You can't wrong at either place.

+1 I JUST got back on sunday from here! 8 days. AMAZING!!

Few things (i travel ALL over world, but 1st time to Maui)

-The kids/Tourist bug the SHIT out of me...not my scene. FIND a quiet beach!
-Drive to Lahina for food/stuff..the small towns are SPENDYYYY for stuff (milk was $10/gal by Kapalua, but only $5 in Lahina)
-its HUMID there, i know duh, but more than i expected
-the airport is HORRIBLE!!! I mean SLOWWWW be sure to go a bit earlier than say a REAL airport (i thought CDG in Paris was bad!)
-Gas is CHEAPER at the rental car place! ODD but true, only $4.38 at Budget, but no station in town under $4.67.
-The Luau at "i forget hotel" maybe the Marriot? called DRUMS OF THE OCEAN was awesome, plus OPEN BAR! HEY YOOO.

ENJOY YOURSELF!

oh yeah, if flying Hawaiian airlines, DRESS WARM! the planes are FREEZING AC'd unlike my other flights 30 times a year.

Haven't had club access at the Kapalua property, but have thoroughly enjoyed my past stays there. And Kapalua is somewhat removed from the more touristy areas.

Out of curiosity, when was the last time you went? The renovated hotel is supposedly amazing...especially the new spa. I'll be staying there in a couple of weeks for a couple of weeks.

I know...and I shudder in fear knowing the humidity will seriously affect my running. Probably not the ideal conditions for anyone to attempt their first marathon, but I'm already registered and have sacrificed many hours to get myself ready.
