Yes, I mentioned track first ..... Time for me to get back on the track with tires that I can drive to/from. Did a quick review of the last 2 months post and haven't seen much feedback.

I know the issue of the 235x40x17 rubbing but this can be minimized with proper tire selection; if that is the choice I have to live with, so be it since the use primarily to track with [but Nitto NT01 is out of the question given the damage it can cause]. Given that I am not looking for the last 1/10th lap rime, even a 215x40x17 would be fine for the front presumably matched to no larger than 265x35x18

* I have used the RA1s (235 and 275) shaved and heat cycled and they were fine - and now seem a candidate for my current needs. But how do they stack up with R888 (235 with either 265 or 275) or the R1R (235 and 265 - the rear should help with minimizing understeer).

* What about the following - and yes tread depth, weight do vary among them; so does price.

Yoko ADvan A08 [215 and 235 with 265 and they even have 285]
Dunlop Direzza II [comes in both 215 and 235, and 265 and 275; tirerack likes the more responsive steering]
Falken 615 [Are these still viable? They are quite cheap]
Nitto NT05 [235 and 265 and 275; good price but will it have the same firtment issue as NT01?]

Am I missing other candidates?

The advan now comes in a 'r' spec. Speedhunters did a article on it so check that out i run the new Z11 Dunlops and they are really good

What is this damage you're talking about with the NT01s? I ran NT01s on a track/street car and they were awesome.

I'm running AD08s on the NSX and they've been really great tires, although I haven't tracked on them yet. They are wearing very well though, I have about 6000 miles on them currently.

The Falken 615s are now the 615K, which are much more expensive than the original 615s.

Thanks for the responses. I am using the comments of those (docjohn and 1K2GO) who have tracked with 235x30x17 NT01 and have stated given its wider footprint it seems to tear the fender liners. I was able to dial the fender liner issue with RA1s by using more camber (which it needs albeit I am not at their min 3), and raised the car a bit.

I did not see RE-11 sizes that fit the front on Tirerack or discounttire. The Advan A048 or Hankook R-S3 also do not come with front sizes.

The choice still has to be streetable. And so far DZ II is the most promising. But I like to get some comparisons with NT05 and A08. Tirerack has not posted test results on these three together.

I have not run the nito......based on 1k2go's experience he measured his 235 nto1 and they were 9mm wider than the 235 ra1....which barely fits in my wheel well with my ssr 7.5 inch wheels....the 225/40 would be a perfect size but the only tire in that size is the hoosier R6,can't be drivin that to and from. From what i have read the r888 is not as streetable (wear related) as the ra1.....thoughts?

Tire Rack does not test tires they don't sell, so you won't see a Tire Rack comparison that includes any Nitto tires.

The ZII is new, and the only comparison they've done of it is against its predecessor, the Star Spec. At the end of that test, they said, "We'll be doing a full road, dry and wet track comparison in 2013 to see how the Direzza ZII compares with other tires in the Extreme Performance Summer category. Stay tuned."

Really? first I have heard of this... an AD08R? I have AD08's now and I think they are better than my old Star Spec Z1. In many areas including noise, ride and wear, not just grip. Although I liked the Z1 a lot better than the Falken 615.

EDIT:

Looks like they will be out sometimes soon. I think this is your answer Hrant, I don't think you will find better overall:

Is the ZII tire the star spec? Star specs and AD08 are similar in grip but the AD08 is more expensive, better street tire, quieter, etc...

NT01 is better in terms of grip, feel, and stability than the ra1 and especially the r888.

Billy thanks for the feedback. The Dizerra II is the newer version of the star spec and tirerack's test of the two seems to like the steering precision and the more confidence in planted rears of the DZ II compared to the star spec. Yes the AD08 especially the rears are quite expensive.

Dave, will look into AD08R but not sure how long I wait; I am not getting younger!

Hey Billy your pm box is full again,so her is my response to your pm.....thanks,the Ra1 is only 9 inches wide, the R888 9.2 and the nto1 is 9.6...... you are spot on tough to predict whether a 205/275 nitto combo would be any different then the 235/275 Ra1.

John, I spent some time yesterday at America's Tire (Discount Tire Direct) going over the section width numbers you reference. One must keep in mind that these measurements are not standardized or uniform but they are specific to the tire manufacturer. Most of the 235/40 are in the range of 9.4+ to 9.6. But a 9.6 Nitto may be different from the 9.6 RA1 - at least that is my reading from the posts.

I suspect a 205/275 will cause understeer - assuming one's suspension is going to be tweaked too far to adjust for this. My "thinking is 215 and 265 are good balanced match, and so would a 225 or 235 and 275. A combo of 235 and 265 would help with more steering grip and thus minimize the inherent understeer of an NSX; but with a SC or Turbo, I suspect the rears would do better with 275.

on the tire rack site the ra1 is listed at 9 even...and at that I still have just a few mm of liner wear,as well as a nice polished inner wheel well...thus for me I don't think i could spare another mm with my wheels.....sadly there is no 225/40/17 and no 215/40 in either r888 or nto1. So am I stuck with my chronic ra1 setup or do I chance the 205 /275..or 255 mto1 setup..Billy seems to think its a toss up,and he is most likely right......I just wanted a faster tire :frown:

IIRC, the "R" nomenclature for the Yok AD08 R stands for "Revolution" and not an R compound tire as we know it.

Get bfg r1s. Or 235 nt01 - + wheel spacers and more - camber

I would take your advice..but I'm still a drive to the track guy..sometimes hundreds of street miles,I'm on the non adjustable R susp and thus my camber is already maxed....So really I'm the reason why i can't change..that and the fact that these companies don't make enough fricken sizes in thier r comps:mad:
