Re-paint Red Targa Top to Black?

I really like the look of a black top on a red NSX.

I have a 2000 red NSX and have been thinking about painting the targa top black.

Would this change the value of the car?

What does everyone else think of a red car/red targa vs. red car/black targa?

Thanks everyone!

It's a matter of preference. If the repaint is quality work, shouldn't affect the value of the car but if you want to retain the original paintwork, you may try wrapping the top in black. Should you change your mind or wish to sell the car keeping it all original, you peel it off and your red top is left intact.

Thanks Vytas!

Curious about what others think of the red body/black targa combo???

To be perfectly honest, I think it dates the NSX back to the mid 90s.

With this black painted top, it will remind you of the Camero, C5 Corvette and the Firebird.

Just my opinion but I am particle to the monochromatic look.

I hope this helps!

I stand corrected, I just came across the new 458 and I love it.

I might have to rethink my last statement...

One thing to consider is how the car will look with the top off. In my opinion, something looks off when taking the top off when a targa NSX is painted like a 91-94 NSX. Maybe people who have done this can post pics with the top off. Or perhaps someone can Photoshop the pillars black on a targa car with the top off.

My opinion is to not paint it. I think the red all over would look better.. but that is just my preference, Im not making your car payments :)

On the other hand, if you do paint it, I agree with the vinyl idea.. that way the next guy will be happy either way.

If you do paint it consider having proof that it was painted for preference not due to damage. I know when I buy a car it throws up a huge red flag when I see a repaint. I almost didnt buy a car because of that, but the seller came up with video he shot the day he had it repainted to prove it was just little rock chiips and not an accident or other damage. I was able to purchase with no reservations... you may want to do the same thing.. (btw, he used a newspaper beside the car before and after to show the dates) kind of a good idea I thought!

it seems everyone is always worried about resale, if you like it, you own it and do what you prefer imo. just doesnt make sense to preserve for the next owner, just my .02

I still think vinyl is the way to go.

Having said that, was it favorable to see the NSX-R with a black roof? Or should it have been released as one whole color?

+1 on the vinyl idea.

IMO white is the only color that looks good with the black top!

it does look much better on white

and I am also with the vinyl idea...if you find you do not like it, then take it off. shouldn't cost more than $500 - $750 to do.

Go vinyl if you don't like it or want to sell it remove the vinyl and nobody will know.
 It will be our little secret...

P.S. post some pics before and after

I'll have to disagree on that captainjman...

If your car is all original, I agree with others vinyl wrap it and call it a day.

Any time you repaint a NSX, it will negatively affect the value of the car. A high-quality, OEM-like job will be a small impact and a crappy rush job will have a larger impact. Personally, I do not care for the black top on the early cars. I think you should leave yours red. The only NSX I ever thought it looked right on is the NA2 NSX-R. Incidentally, Keiichi Tsuchiya had his NSX-R top painted white to match the rest of the car...

I like the all white NSX-R's better,

I've often wondered the same thing...it was the original look of the NSX that always caught my attention....the black top made it seem like a jet-fighter cockpit .....I don't have photshop, but here is a pic of a silver coupe and a silver T-top for comparison....if using a vinyl wrap, would the wrap also be used for A and B pillars? IF someone can photoshop, it would be interesting to see what the NSX T would look like with roof off, and just the black A and B pillars in black...I think it would look awesome with roof on, but with it off, may look funny?? I would also be curious to see what a black roof only would look like (leave A and B pillars in body color with black roof on?)

If I were you I would leave the car as it is in purely stock form. Vinyl wrap looks like poop - it's not nearly as shiny as the real paint at least I have never seen vinyl that looks that good. I'd leave it alone.

For me the question is what does a Targa car with a black roof look like with the top off. For me, something seems off when the top is taken off a Targa car with a black roof (all black targas excluded of course )...just my opinion of course.

Seeing those pics of the blue... I have to say I like the color matched top much better.

I agree that if you take the top off, a color-matched top looks better. However, if you plan on keeping the top on, then I think a black top would look great...especially with black side-mirrors. Perhaps if the side mirrors were painted black on the blue car with the black top it would look better.

The NSX is a very wide, flat looking car. The black roof makes the body look even flatter--a plus, in my opinion.
