R compound tires on 17" rims, front size

I am finally getting ready to step up to R compound tires for next season. I would like to know how big a tire others are running on their cars? I would like to leave my liners in place to save my fenders, so I will get some rubbing I am sure, but some guidance would be good.

My car has Eibach sport springs on Koni shocks, I have 7 mm spacers under the spring perches to bring the front of the car up by 12 mm. My wheels are 8.5"x 17" on the front and I am currently running Kumho MX 215/40-17 with a tiny bit of rub at full lock.

I am thinking of using Yoko A032R tires and it looks like 235/40-17 would be the tire of choice, does anyone run this with the liners still in place? Does shaving the tires help with the clearance? Is there a 215/40 or 225/40 R compound tire out there?

The previous owner used to run 205/40 and 245/40 Hoosiers on the car, but I wonder about going to the smaller tire sizes.

They will rub.

Not much. Not enough to eliminate the rubbing.

No, but the Toyo RA-1 comes in 205/40-17 front and 255/40-17 rear. And you should be able to fit a set of tires with those sizes inside the car to bring to the track.

tires

nsxtasy,
What do you run for tires? I understand the Toyo needs at least 2 degrees negative camber to hook up, I don't know if I want to run that much for daily driving, does it matter?

Dave,
I have 17x8 SSR GT1s with Toyo RA-1s with 235-40-17s in front. I also have the Koni-Eibach set up and only rub at full lock usually turning around at slow speed. On the Track I have had no issues with rubbing and my -camber is around 1.75.

Last year, I ran 235/40-17's with Kumho Ecsta V700 R compounds in front with 285/30-18's in back. Little bit of rubbing in the city at full lock. But certainly no rub while on track. Front camber is neg 2.5.

This year I'm running (still have to use them at the track though), 245/40-17 front and 285/30-18 Hoosiers. Wheels are 17x8.5 and 18x10.5. Understand, I have no experience with this size but am looking forward to getting them on the track soon. I think DH runs/ran this combination.

What was your experience with the wearability of these tires ??

TireRack suggests that these be shaved if used for dry track work, mainly to prevent blistering. Anecdotal evidence shows that this can result in significantly reduced tire life (as in sub-1000 miles).

215/40/17 R tires are hard to find. I only know of 2: Bridgestone RE55 and RE070.

Let me know if you find any.
RE070 is a high/max perf street tire, NOT an R compound. In the US its only available in Subie WRX STi size (225-45-17: too tall for the NSX :( )

RE55 is promising, but is N/A in the US :(

I got about 4 events out of them before the right rear deflated w/ a puncture so tire life is still a question mark. I gave away the other tires. I'd think that I could have gotten a couple more events out of them. Yes, I did get them shaved from Tire Rack.

I track two cars. On both, I had been using Yokohama A032R tires, with the stock '91 sizes of 205/50-15 and 225/50-16 on the NSX. On the non-NSX car, I recently switched over to Toyo RA-1 tires. After I use up the A032R that I already have on the NSX, I plan to switch to the RA-1 on that car as well, again in the stock sizes.

Is your car lowered?

It was at that time. Lowered about 1 inch all around with Eibach springs and Koni single adjustables. A lucky gentlemen in Cali was the buyer a few months ago. I've thus moved to the Comptech Pro and it'll be about the same in total drop.
