Question on Timing Belt/Headers/Tranny Swap all at once

This is what is on the "to do" list:

- 90k (timing belt, water pump, belts, valve guides, etc.)
- Replace hoses
- Replace 5spd tranny with 6spd.
- New single disk clutch to replace dual disks
- Install aftermarket headers

My question is about how much labor is this going to take?

Do they have to take off the exhaust manifolds anyway which means I get the install labor for free on the headers?

Do I get the tranny swap for next to nothing since they are most likely going to drop the engine for the timing belt?

If I only need to pay for the 90k and some additional miscellaneus labor on the tranny, I will have a trusted mechanic do it.

I think that you mean "valve adjustment"

-Replace 5spd tranny with 6spd.

This is a very expensive undertaking, what do you figure it is going to cost?

When you take your car into a shop there isn't anything that is FREE.

There is no reason to drop the engine to do the timing belt. I would not even drop the engine if I was going to do everything that you want to do. I only take apart what I need to in order to do the job.

What have you found as a base price to do the 90K service. I think that it is not uncommon to be in the $1500 plus range. I did mine myself for about $350. Now, add in removal of the 5-Speed, clutch replacement, etc. Have you thought of selling your NA1 and finding a NA2 that is current on maintenance? Just a thought.

By 'free' work, you are referring to overlap in suggested labor times, or 'flate rate'. The only overlap here is small. The 90k and t-belt combined should be about 12 hours, the overlap being in the valve adjust. Doing the hoses at the same time as the water pump means only filling and bleeding the cooling system once so the hoses should be an hour. There is no overlap doing the trans / clutch at the same time as the engine service because the engine does not come out for either. The headers have a samll amount of overlap because the rear beam is already out for the trans work.

IMO, or in my shop, it would be-
12 hours t/belt, w/pump, 90k
1 hour hoses (assuming 3 engine and two radiator hoses)
10 hours 6 spd conversion / clutch
3 hours headers
----
26 hours when all done at the same time.

Tony,

I have just had some questions about this exact topic (minus the tranny swap). I spoke to guys on Prime and my mechanic. IF your mechanic decides to drop the engine totally, you may have some efficiencies in each of the tasks, but there will also be extra labor hours included for dropping the engine. These will need to be weighed out by you and your mechanic. He will need to figure out the break even point on time saved vs. extra charged for engine removal. Good luck with this.

BTW - Charles tried to call you yesterday regarding a question for me. If you get a chance give him a ring back. I will try to give you a buzz also. Hopefully we will talk soon, if not Happy holidays.
