Question about my ABS going bad

My ABS is apparently going bad. It makes a repetitive clicking sound almost the entire time I drive the car. I tried Drew's bleeder tool last year when it wasn't so bad, but it didn't help. However it's getting worse therefore I took it to Autowave last week to purge the system to see if that would help. Unfortunately the ABS still makes the clicking noise repeatedly and now the ABS seems to active more often when I was on the track yesterday.

Anyhow, I need to purchase a new ABS system and wanted to get any advice if this has happened to anyone else. The new ABS systems are very expensive and I'm cringing at the thought of buying a new one.

1) Is it possible to rebuild that ABS system? If so, has anyone rebuilt theirs?
2) Does anyone have any suggestions on buying a used ABS? I tried to search NSXPrime but the forum won't recognize 3 letter words like ABS therefore I wasn't able to search.

I've read that the newer ABS system is really good and am tempted to do the upgrade.

To search Prime for 'ABS', use the regular Google search with the following criteria:

ABS site:nsxprime.com

I got tired of the stock ABS system on my '91 and finally replaced it with the later (no reservoir) system.
Great mod! Brakes have far superior feel now -- this is the brake pedal feel I've been craving since I got the car years ago.
Parts from SOS. Do it!

The SOS / second gen is the exact same p/n that is on the S2000. The S2000 brakes are superior to the NSX first gen.

Yeah, eventually what will happen is it will click for a long time, puke brake fluid, and then no more ABS (speaking from experience). I did the ABS update with the SOS kit and have not regretted the expense at all considering that now:

- I can bleed my brakes normally and call it a day (no extra ABS bleed proceedure)
- have no need to exercise the ABS regularly to avoid stuck solenoids
- have full confidence that the ABS will work every time
- my car weighs probably 30lbs less.

For reference. The old unit is on the left, the new unit is on the right (size 9 for reference ;) )

Honestly the hardest part of the install was fishing the new harness through the firewall (a little soap on the grommet goes a long way). It is VERY plug-and-play for what it does.

My ABS Pump took a dump about a month ago. I yanked the fuse so I didnt have to hear the pump run every 3 minutes. I have been contemplating this mod as well.

I've got the sos kit as well...works fine. The other cheapo solution is to delete the abs alltogether.

I, too, updated my ABS to the new system. It is quite a bit of work and as NSX2398 phrased it, is not for the faint of heart. Though, after completing the modification, the car feels absolutely fabulous. If you decide to go this route make sure you purchase the SOS kit. They are very responsive and helpful should you find yourself in a pinch. Research here on prime and see what comments folks have left behind because many of those who have performed the upgrade have discussed the process and there is a lot to learn from their commentary (I did).

Like others, I love the fact that I don't have to bleed two systems and that it actually is significantly simpler. Hands down the best mod that I've ever done. It's worth every penny.

Thanks for the great info. I'm contemplating the NA2 setup.

Chris,
Does the S2000 ABS not have rear independent channels? Can you explain how this system is different than the S2000?
Thanks,
Ryan

It's actually even better because the rear brakes are on independant channels!

Ryan - the new system will be a huge improvement to the old system, especially on the track. Aside from the performance, it's also much lighter, and gets rid of the trouble parts.

If I had an S2000 ABS system would it be easy to adapt it to the NSX with the SOS parts. Does anyone know what the part number is for the S2000 ABS unit that works in the NSX? If so, is the unit from the first generation S2000 (AP1) or the second generation S2000 (AP2)?

Don't bother. The modulator is the only piece that could be used. You would need the S0S wiring harness, mount, custom brake lines, etc.

The SOS kit provides a lot of value

I do love this website. Haven't been on in a coupla months.

So.... by semi-regularly invoking the ABS (usually on-track), that is actually GOOD for the system?

Every time I go on track, I invoke the ABS several times. I figure it lets me know I'm near the limit. I'm glad it's there, but would like to hear from those who track their cars WITHOUT ABS. What are the advantages/disadvantages? BTW- I disconnected the traction control altogether several years ago.

I just purchased the SOS NA2 ABS. I'll be installing it before NSXPO. Can't wait to test it out on the track at Spring Mtn.
