I just receive my 12volt battery maintainer from Griot's garage. It say to attach the red clamp to the positive terminal and the black clamp to a piece of metal on the engine block.Should I be hooking this product up directly to the battery or to where the jumper hook ups are in the engine bay?If the hook up is directly on the battery would can I hook the black clamp to that is metal in the front of the car? Thanks for any help.JD

This is why this particular setup is a PITA. (What are you going to do, leave the engine hatch open and the alarm de-activated?) The onboard charger is much more convenient because you only need to strap it alongside the battery once. After that, you just plug it into an electrical extension cord whenever you want it connected.

Of course they do. That's because in most cars it's easy to access the battery. In the NSX - with which they're obviously not familiar - it's not easy to access the battery, so the engineers built a positive terminal in the engine compartment where it's within easy reach. Use it.

The onboard chargers - the ones you attach one time, and they're mounted conveniently on your car - attach directly next to the battery. Easy.

If you have an (inconvenient) charger that you have to clip on every time you use it, you may as well use the terminal in the engine compartment.

So basically,I can hook it up to either spot.Hooking it up to the battery is not too much of a pain in the butt because they supply two wires with eye hooks on one end and quick disconnects on the other end.So the wires always stay hooked to your battery and when you want to hook it up you just plug it in.I also just got the quik disconnect for when you want to disconnect the battery. One turn of the knob and its disconnected.JD

I had one on my Porsche, and I'll put one on the NSX in the fall. The way I prefer to install it is to mount the actual maintainer (charger) to the garage wall next to an outlet and extend the low voltage (12V) wires about 10 feet. I use 16AWG twisted pair red/black. I solder a male connector on the end (the type you see on most notebook computers) with the plus voltage going to the center conductor and minus going to the outer barrel.
In the car, permanently attach matching red and black wires to the battery terminals and solder a matching female connector on the end. (to be safe I put a 3A inline fuse from the plus battery terminal to the red wire). Use wire ties or another elegant solution to mount the female connector in a convenient location under the front hood.
Now when you want to connect your car, all you have to do is open the hood, plug in the connectors, and the wire is thin enough that you can even close the hood. Be sure that you don't forget the car is hooked up and drive away.
YMMV
