Can you tell me more about this heavy bumper steel frame?

The USDM cars was not offered with the Aluminum bumper beam, until 1995. But switched back from early NA1 models because of the US crash standards. In Japan, the lighter aluminum beam was first available to the NA1 Type R, but later spread to all NA2 Models.

Vance, from that what I know the NA2 aluminium version isnt much lighter than the old version. I had both into my hands, no significant difference.

Please specify your wish.
I have so many pictures

In that case, are you referring to some other piece when you said "heavy bumper steel frame"?

well, we spend the last day of the year (and NYE) working on the shift lights for the NA2R gauge cluster kit.

Finally we found a solution and the lights are working

The green light is 600 rpm before the red light ( best wishes to the original)

Forget to say....we topped the original system because we can set to display revs at anywhere between idle & 9,000 rpm.
An additional rotating thumb wheel allows that.

Detief, keep me posted on the shift lights:wink:

If you ever will remove your bumper, you will see that japanese steel
part behind bumper skin and styropor absorber.

I dont have weight that. (Someone did?)
It will be replaced with a light version...thats all.

The steel rear bumper beam in the NA1 NSX weighs 7.4 kg = 16.2 Lbs.

This is without counting the two bumper mounts which are used to mount the bumper to the rear of the car.
These two mounts together weigh an additional 1.5 kg or 3.4 lbs.

The whole rear bumper of my car, including a 2002 lower valence, weighs a 19.2 kg or 42.3 lbs (without license plate).
Which of course means that all those plastic parts of the bumper, the lower valence, the licenseplate mount, wiring etc. weigh again as much as the steel beam inside.

I would like to know how much weight is saved by the aluminum bumper beam but my quess is that it is probably not that much. I know from personal experience how strong that steel bumper beam is, even after my crash at Spa the bumper beam itself was still usable although it was slightly bent. It took me half a day to get that bent out of it.

My friend Dirk, the guy with the biggest used NSX spare parts stock in Europe told me that the aluminium bumper beam has nearly the same weight as the steel bumper beam. No significant difference.

These bumpers are really heavy.
Maybe I should concept a cf version

Hi Detlef,
Of course, the bumpers are indeed really heavy. However, they also seem to be pretty strong. In my crash, the bottom of my trunk was completely folded and had to be replaced, but, like said above, the bumper beam could still be used.
I'm not sure if a bumper beam in carbon fibre would possess the same impact strenght. Although I of course would love to loose say 7-8 kg. on the NSX in such a very important place.

well, maybe you are right but what help is it if that frame is still OK and rest of the car is damaged.

Its a nearly 20 years old construction....in the meanwhile the front bumpers are very light at the Type R models.
The NSX-R race car has a very light frame, thats the way we wanna go too.

Maybe I should concept a cf version

Thought about it some years ago too but I believe there's no thing like steal as a bumper. A CF part would crack or shatter letting increase the damage to the body overall.

Thanks that you are worried about my car's health

Tomorrow we will find out if there is a way to modify that steel frame.
We will keep that posted.

The NSX-R side skirts are in backorder status too....seems that we have to
produce a mold for cf version after that.

The last step for a complete R conversion started at 18th december
A a lot of work for the next few months, parts in backorder status and finally a lot of money.

Seems that we have to be creative for a new harness (there are too many cables)

yesterday we finished the preparation work for the new headlight conversion.
Some aluminium is gone....
...and finally the harness looks sorted out.
Each detail found a special solution until now, the rest should be not that difficult.

The driver side headlight and some parts of the new NSX-R sideskirts are still in backorder, but the frontbumper is a the body shop sincelast saturday.

Please, post the price for the headlight brackets when you know it ....
We will do that...no problem, sir.

please pm for details

some shift light news.....(in combination with the NSX-R gauge cluster kit)

we got some more inquiries and decided to develop another kit, which will
have these features:

1) red shift light can be adjusted in 100 rpm steps from 2000 - 12000 rpm
2) green shift light can be adjusted in 100 rpm steps from the same point
as the red light until 600 rpm lower as the red shift light.
3) the green light is is not sequenziel and will stop function if the red light is on.
4) additional thumb wheel for blinking speed.

The kit has the same features as the Honda NSX-R original, but uses
LED technology instead of simple bulbs.
Because all is free programmable, it should be an upgrade.

we have some used NA1 parts for sale now
(colour code is R77 formula red)

NA1 side skirts (pair)
NA1 headlights (complete pair with the covers)
NA1 blinkers
NA1 foglights
NA1 hood
NA1 front bumper (complete)
NA1 frontsplitter

please email me for detailed pictures and prices
the parts are in good condition.
