I'm doing some research for a marketing company and I'd like to hear what your thoughts on Pinkberry are.

Do you guys feel it is a fad and will disappear within a couple of years? Or has the yogurt permanently captured the taste buds of Califonian's?

It really depends on how well the company executes. As long as they can build a brand around it and follow Jamba Juice's lead. I thought Jamba Juice was originally a fad, but they have done a fantastic job building it into a high visible brand. So far they are doing the right things to make it a brand.

I heard somewhere Pinkberry started in South Korea and very popluar in Asia. There are already several asian companies that have very similar business model as Pinkberry. As long as they can market it to more than just the Asian crowd, they can be more than just a fad.

But you can also make the arguements that it could follow the boba drink trend. In that market there was no market leader that built a brand around it. It caters too much to an Asian market and did a poor job introducing it to others. You can make serveral arguements why. Some people just don't like boba because of taste and texture, Poor business execution, lack of experience in building national brands, lack of marketing and advertising skills, lack of franchising experience, etc. I think all of the arguements played a factor into not making it more mainstream and Jamba Juice level.

Shiftybob, it says there's a pinkberry in Temecula. Theres also Yogurt World in Kearny Mesa near the Infinit dealer. I'm sure you will see many more pop up everywhere.

very well thought out reply.. thanks.. Actually, Pinkberry did not start out in Korea.. A company called RED MANGO first created the frozen yogurt buzz in Korea. Pinkberry copied it and opened a store in Hollywood claiming they were the originiators..

Awesome input on the Jamba juice/boba.. very insightful. Thanks!

man... id like to try some and maybe start one here

I haven't tried Pinkberry, but I tried PeachHouse and Kiwiberry. Girls seem to like it a lot.. I don't understand why, but maybe because the yougurt is frozen yougurt? Also, I heard Pinkberry got sued for something. I heard their green tea yougurt is nasty as hell too! I wonder what's up with all these berry names. Honestly, the two that I went to... the yougurt seemed to taste the same.. it was just the difference in the variety of toppings. Seems like it's here to stay. These places are PACKED after 8pm, mostly by teenagers.
What made me chuckle was that all these places are all owned by Koreans.

+1 on the Korean part. =)

Pinkberry has a good product and I'm surprised if you haven't heard of it. Celebrities are all talking about it and I see it all over TV news, newpaper columns, etc. But there is a lot of controversy surrounding the product and whether it's really yogurt. Calories wise, it's not much different than Golden Spoon. It has no active cultures so people say it's not real yogurt.

It's undergoing a very rapid expansion program right now. They are getting the best retail locations because commercial landlords want to have them. The product is good, but it's trendy and going to one is as much about the atmosphere as it is the product. I honestly see it collapsing slowly due to over-expansion and competition. Red Mango opened up in Westwood BTW. I think I saw another Pinkberry clone off of Laurel Canyon north of the 101 and it looked great aesthetics wise. There is no reason why someone cannot come up with a competing product that tastes as good and a nice decor to enjoy the product. Pinkberry's big advantage is that they can get the best locations due to their desirability.

Big pluses for that type of business is the simple product, high margins, easy tenant improvements. But the competition will hurt it and the novelty will soon wear off IMO. I think it will stay around but many stores will close. Similar to what we are seeing with Quiznos and Coldstones except with a lot more copycats.
