Pictures of *your* rear bumper...

This may be an unusual request, but could some people send me some good pictures of their rear bumper (or post them to this thread?) I need preferably a black car, with the picture showing the detail in the reflection of the "mirror" finish.

Long story short... I had my rear bumper painted and it is not a mirror finish (ie- it's "shiny", but there's no detail in the reflection... you all know what I mean). They say it can't be done (and came up with every excuse in the book). I said how about I get you pics of other NSX rear bumpers?

I tell ya... my life is one big automotive nightmare. ;)

Anyway, any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Ben

Maybe it just needs to be wet sanded??

Here's the best I could find of mine:

You should be able to polish it. Every new paint job should be able to be polished to a high gloss except maybe a cheapie Maaco single stage paint.

Good luck.

Here's mine !

OK, it's not really a bumper specific picture but I can't resist to answer when someone ask for a shiny black NSX ! :D

Maybe Gheba NSX will post a picture of his "2nd shiniest black NSX in Switzerland" too ! :p :p :p

actually....

Your bumper should just need to be wet sanded and polished to achieve that "mirror" finish you are looking for. If the shop will not do it you might try a local detail shop that is used to wetsanding and polishing. HLWEYL made an incorrect statement, base coat clear coat is much easier to wetsand because you are removing the imperfections (ie texture or orange peel) from the clear and not effecting the color. A single stage finish can also be cut and polished (except metallics) but can be trickier because you are actually removing some of the color and it is much easier to burn through the paint. Many new vehicles come with a single stage finish. Body shops around the world still use both single and two stage paint. Saying a "cheapy" Maaco job can't be polished is an unfair statement.

Please show me where I said that a 2 stage base/clear paint job cannot be wet sanded. You are misquoting me sir;)

I am not all-knowing in the area, but I am unaware of any manufacturer NOT using base coat/clear coat. Perhaps you know of a manufacturer using single stage paint for their new cars, please enlighten.

I've posted this pic of my car before, but it shows the rear bumper, so here it is! You can see the shine of the lights in the bumper paint. :)

One other thing you may want to think about....

If the bumper was just recently repainted, give it a month or so before wet sanding and buffing. The paint will most likely 'sink' and your 'mirror' shine may dull again.

Not sure exactly what they put in paint, but once I had my first car painted at one of those Econo shops and the black paint was still sinking after like 2.5 months. They add some type of hardening/quick dry chemical to expedite the drying process.

Paint type...

Thanks for all of the responses! I'm bringing it in to show the boss of the place what I'm talking about. I'm also going to show him the poor fit when they reattached the bumper.

On a black car you should be able to hold a dime up to it and see the date in the reflection. (shines so you can see the date on a dime!)

Just got it back from having the bumper painted today.

You can do the same on the Red ones, you should be able to do it on just about all NSX OEM paint colors. The factory paint is amazing and after 13 years I still cannot believe how deep the paint is.

Hey JLindy glad to see her shining again, now wax dat A$$ if you have not already.

i LOVE the way pure black looks like black chrome when new ......

*drooling*

I wish there was a way to keep black looking like that all the time .. waxing just doesnt cut it... especially for cars that are 11+ years old .. the paint turns a dark dark brown color ... nasty
