Hi

I have used the search until I got dizzy(well I am dizzy all the time actually) but I could not find out what I need and what to do.

Well since I will not be driving my NSX much this summer as I fell and hit my head hard in april I plan on doing some major things next year.

I have everything I need in a box from SOS ready to ship soon to adjust the valves including new spark plugs.

I would want to include what I need to change the timing belt and water pump. What do I need? I think I read a post from SOS here on some little thingy you should change which is often not changed. I can't remember what and where I read it now. Anybody?

Is there a cover which I should change? I have a 1991 european model.

If somebody can post a list of what I need I would be gratefull. SOS says that they usually needs to supply the timing belt and the water pump and thats it. I would think that there are some gaskets and things I have not tought of that I need/should change?

The timing belt and probably the water pump was changed about 70.000km and I would like to do it some time soon. The cooling hoses looks fine and I do not think they need changing.

What other things should I consider to be done? I will be changing fluids on the tranny and also brakes and cooling.

TIA

Regards

The rubber gaskets for the timing belt cover. Helps keep debris out. Gaskets for the valve covers and I think the gasket for the plates covering the coils. Don't forget the "fan" belt (for lack of a better term, but powers the A/C and alternator).

I would inspect the rubber gaskets for the timing belt covers first. They are very expensive, the one for the large cover is like $83, so if they are good don't replace, just wipe clean. If the valve cover gaskets are leaking replace them. The belt for the alternator and the one for the A/C can be inspected for wear. Replace them if they need it, but not if they are in good shape.

I replace the front crankshaft seal when I do a timing belt. I recently replaced the crankshaft pulley (harmonic balancer) with the later model. My car is a 91 and the original pulley has the 6 holes in the face. The later model is solid and weights about 1/2 lb less than the old style. The old style pulley can be inspected to verify that the solid rubber damper is still bonded to the steel pulley. My old style pulley is still good, I replaced it since I had the newer one. If someone needs a good pulley let me know. I will let it go reasonably.

I would change them anyway. (In fact, I just had mine changed for the second time.) They're not very expensive and you don't want one to fail when you're out on a deserted road overlooking a fiord.

This is good advice. I recently had a hose fail, but it was fortunately not on a deserted road. In fact, it was overlooking some Fords though. And some Chevys.

BTW, there are over 20 coolant hoses!

Ken, are you going to suggest changing the harmonic balancer?

I suggest you find the old FAQ by Gary Kentosh, assuming its in the new Wiki section of NSX Prime. That one has great hints and includes a suggested parts list. Follow the part where you mark the old belt and the cam & crank gears, transfer the marks to the new belt, then align the marks during installation. If you have not done a belt before, it is a great way to ensure you don't wind up with the belt one tooth off.

I did the timing belt on my '96 this year, and found no reason at all to change the timing belt cover gaskets. I wiped them down with Dow Corning #4 compound (a laboratory grade clear silicon grease used to preserve and lubricate rubber). Not only did it leave them soft and pliable, but the 3 pieces of the cover timing belt cover slipped back together very easily.

If you are replacing the water pump, the old style water pump is no longer available. You either need a new lower cover (expensive), or you simply drill a weep hole for the newer style pump in the old cover, and fill the weep hole for the old pump with silicon rubber. Its very simple to hold the old and new pumps over the cover and figure out where to drill the new weep hole. After installing the cover, place a rubber washer over the new weep tube to prevent dust & dirt from getting into the cover. The washer is slightly smaller than the one that goes over the timing belt adjustment bolt.
