Painting the Roof

My 91 NSX has a black canopy with a red body. I was wondering how much it costs to paint the canopy body colored for those that have done it before. Also, I was wondering what the opinions are as far as Black Canopy vs. Body-colored canopy.

I kind of want to make my NSX appear like a slightly newer model -- although I still cannot convince myself that a red roof on my red body would look any better if not just different.

previous owner of mine did it for around $900 i think. It is perfect though. I fancy myself somewhat picky about paint and i cannot tell the difference between the factory paint and the roof.

I believe he said that they did it exactly like the factory procedure, which (for mine being formula red) was a few (4?) coats of orange and then a purple clear...? Am I right about this guys? But either way it's perfect and I am now glad it looks like it does. Weird because I was a fan of red with black tops until i saw this car.

I prefer the black canopy.

Then leave it alone.

The easiest way to tell which way you like better, of course, is to put your car side by side with one with a matching roof. If you think painting it is a big improvement, then do it; otherwise, don't do it.

I also prefer the black canopy, but then again, I have a black car ;)

Seriously though, I always thought that it looked better for the roof to match the rest of the car.

When I bought my first NSX (91), I chose black, specifically to avoid the "two tone" look. Never liked the different colored top aesthetically. In the end, It is, afterall, simply preference.

The statement in your question is absolutely right IMO, it will not look better, just different. I would definitely wait a bit until Iwas sure about my decision. Figure that the 400-800 bucks could be spent on maybe some performance stuff or some nice engine dress-up stuff. I personally like the carbon fber engine cover from Dali and may pick one up! Now that would DEFINITELY LOOK BETTER!!

Good Luck

Actually if you want to see a red one locally that has been painted to match, check out Litespeeds - he has window tint shops in San Leandro & Fremont - stop in & see him & get your glass done while you're there! He's a real nice guy - you can find him to pm/e-mail through the member links.

Here is a shot with the black top and not lowered compared to a matching top and lowered 7/8". You guys be the judge of what looks better. Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder!

Several years before I got my Red NSX with Black roof, I thought I would paint the roof to match if I ever got a red one. When I was looking at real NSX's in person rather than pictures, I came to realize that the black top looked OK. In pictures, it can be kind of Camaro or Stealth-looking, but in person there is no mistaking it's cool, exotic looks. Its just so low. Anyway, now that I have one, I've decided against painting the roof red. The painted ones look good too, just make sure and leave the corners above the side mirrors and door handle black. JMO
