i thought the tread does matter of transfering vibrations from road surfaces and irregulars...

Tread does play a very important role in noise and comfort. Tread design only affects noise however on a passenger tire. If one feel "vibrations" due to the tread design, then it's either a problematic tire (uniformity problems mainly, cords separating maybe) or one is talking about these tires:
