Do they really all do that? Or only do that after damage or improper servicing?

This must be part of NSX lore, where people have grown to believe that even new cars still have engine vibrations under 2000 rpm.

I really want to get to the bottom of this. Since I've never driven a brand new NSX before, I can't say from personal experience how Honda intended the NSX engine to run straight out of the factory.

I do vaguely recall an entry on a Prime FAQ that said engine computer programming was updated to remap the timing below 2000 rpm to fix precisely this problem, but I cannot locate that entry anymore.

I hope those of you who'd been through it all can comment on whether any of the following are true, partially true, or not true (to pay respects to that other physicist who loved to give ratings of: wrong, completely wrong, and not even wrong):

The following design features may cause engine vibration:
  1. Air resonances inside intake manifold causing uneven amount of air filling each cylinder when at low rpm.
  2. Valve overlap sacrificing low rpm smoothness for mid-range power, as this is all still using low lift cams with fixed angle camshaft.
  3. Too much ignition advance at low rpm (fixed via ECU reprogramming).
  4. Crankshaft throws at 120 degree spacing not compatible with 90 degree V6, thus causing longitudinal vibrations.
The following damage or improper servicing may cause engine vibration:
  1. Wrong timing belt alignment.
  2. Damaged exhaust valve due to over-revving.
  3. Uneven compression due to bottom-end damage.
  4. Bad fuel injector.
  5. Bad spark plug.
  6. Bad ignition coil.
  7. Bad electronic distributor.
  8. Bad camshaft position sensor, causing ignition timing error.
There are many more on this second list, and if you've come across a really, really obscure one that turns out to be the cause of the problem, please mention it.

But I'm more interested in proofing the items on the first list as correct or incorrect (I hope all incorrect). The items on the second list I've much less experience on, so I won't even take up space here to list them all.
