oil leak

This is the first time I saw oil on the ground in my garage.
What could be the possible reasons why this has occured.
If so, where should I go for it to check for a leak?

I have had an oil leak on my Legend and on the NSX due to an under-tightened drain plug. If you did not use a new crush washer or under-tightened your drain plug it could cause a small oil leak. Once I fixed that, there was no more leak :-)

Good luck.

hm.. when the person replaced the filter, they used the new washer, i'm surprised it just happened now..
I wonder what it could be..

Gowki - you need to inspect your engine. It is not enough to see an oil spot and ask what the problem is because an engine can leak from many places. On the NSX you should check for the cam plugs, the valve covers and the engine sump pan to start. All of these have gaskets that can fail with age. My 91 has had ALL these gaskets replaced at one time or another. Matter of fact the service manual calls for replacing the valve cover gaskets at regular intervals.

I had some oil leak from my cam plug gasket and had that replaced when I did my timing belt and water pump. No more drips 8^)

Can you see where the oil is coming from (left/right side etc.)?
I had a similar problem about two months ago. Turned out it was a over-tightened oil-filter. Changed the filter (and the oil) and the problem was solved.

Dont for get to check your Spool Valves on the left side opposite oil filter. Just take a paper towel and reach under them to see if you have any oil dripping if so you might need the gaskets replaced.

I had some minor leaking coming from my oil pan gasket. Over time it will eventually leak and needs to be replaced. $25 later for the part with some very minor labor is all it took.

What part of the car is the oil leaking from? Have you looked underneath with a flashlight to see if you can localize the source?

If you can tell us generally where it's coming from we can tell you what the likely causes are.

Otherwise everyone's just wasting time.

*UPDATE*

yup, for now all I saw was a leak right under the oil pan screw

Can I just tighten it with a socket wrench?,
should I buy a new washer?
Or?

wait, so your telling me to let all my new oil drain out, just to put a new washer? I'm thinking it just wasn't tight enough..

The service manual says torque the bolt to 33 ft-lb. Do you have a torque wrench? If so, check torque to 33 ft-lb, but do not over tighten. If the bolt was loose, problem solved. If the bolt was tight, replace the washer.

alrite guys, looks like I have leak somewhere else, right near the engine, above the left side of the exhaust pipe?

anyone have any idea what that is?

also where should I go to get this looked at and fixed besides the acura dealer?

on the faq they said it may be leaking from the VTEC spool valve gasket, but I don't know

Gokwi,
Do you mean the drivers side of the car (left side when sitting in the car). Then it does sound like a spool valve-gasket problem to me. I've never had that problem (knock knock) but from other thread here on prime it isn't too much of a problem and not very expensive to fix. But of course, DO get it fixed.

Go to the Acura dealer. If they don't do a lot of NSX service, find another Acura dealer.

I am pretty sure that there aren't any independent mechanics in your part of the country with as much NSX experience as the techs at the Acura dealerships.

yea the way i'am describing the problem is from looking at the rear tail lights..

also does anyone know how long the process takes?

My NSX is 91'...sounds like I've got pretty much the same leak as you. I noticed on my garage floor, right under the exhaust. Also seems that after my last oil change it has gotten alot worse, oil is dripping on the exhaust manifold and now burning when the engine is hot, or I sit idling for a few mins. Its only a few drops so I didn't even notice a drop in oil level on the dip stick.

The Acura dealer looked at mine for free the last time I was in. I've got leaking cam plugs, the tech & service advisor showed me exactly where at the plug end. I'm going to do my timing belt/waterpump in spring I will changed them then. Damn timing belt is original still I've got 90Kms or 50mi on the car now, time for the 11 year old belt to come out!

I'll have a good look then to see if there is a leak anywhere else. Such as the valve cover, spool valve etc...

My good personal friend (Who just happens to be a Honda Certified Mechanic) claims the Accord V6 suffers from the same cam end plug problem... the pulg dries out, and shrinks, then cracks... then leaks... same goes for valve cover and spool valve. I'm gonna guess thats where your problem is just based on the high # of NSX's out there with the same problem as described to me by the dealer...

Hope this helps... http://nsxhelp.com/diy2/Spool_Valve.htm ... info on Spool Valve DIY.

My Acura Dealership charged me $87 for the fix for one Spool Valve that's with a new Gasket.
