I disagree.
How it is that some people find that having someone else 'win' anything in their car is some-how rewarding or means they won something I have no idea.
I have an idea that if I had worked for months to fix a NSX to go fast while stay in one piece then it came in first, I would feel proud. Both driving and tuning can be a kick. It's all good.
I agree. I think it is whatever makes owners happy. Simply stating my own wares.
Obviously some get their satisfaction from building it out and seeing it run well. I don't know that a time attack is necessarily the best format to exemplify that particularly given the limited number of runs but sure I can see that. Some just want to see their ride in magazines. Some use them to drum up business or egos. Others just want to look at it at a car show and yet still others need to win a race or something. Obviously people enjoy their rides differently and I respect that.
I don't care about being overly vocal here so I'll take the risk of sounding like little club whiner b$*tch... but to me, unless you have the resources to field pro I think on the club level it is all about fun and the policies at any type of small club regional competitive event should reflect that mantra.
Their are any number of drivers that are faster than me and their always will be because their is another level past the one you just conquered in your small world.
Personally, I like using other drivers for continued calibration during open lapping to see how fast or slow I am. However in general personally I don't get anything out of footing the bill and just sticking someone else in my fifty or hundred grand car, crossing my fingers, and seeing them run faster then me because I'm not a paid team manager. If you need to do that at an event or something sure.. but to me, overall that's just not what it is all about.
A good magazine article to me is hearing about my peers getting better year in and year out and doing well or how they stack among themselves, not hey look my car ran a X.XX with a rolex driver and destroyed the tuner field on Hoosier drys.
To give you an idea where my perspective comes from it had nothing to do with FX or the red line events although I see why maybe that was inferred from my earlier post.
I found it a little 'off' that Matrix and Stasis Integrated shows up to local Audi event with a full pit crew then runs against a bunch of local guys just trying to have a good time. Still later Crawford coming out with Hoosier Drys and Cosworth engines with Motec running against kids in their tuner STI's. Granted team AR lost by a 1/10th of a second that day with a stock ride but the whole event organization left a sour taste it my mouth for the tuner style time attacks in general. Too many variables.
Hey if they want to come out and open lap sure, or the field is filled with other similar race prepped vehicles sure... but in general that's not what I see. More often what I see is local guys in normal sedans with maybe some Tein's and FI getting spanked on by 5 seconds a lap. So it's kind of like if those types of advantages shouldn't be seen as a big deal and that's the way they feel about it then get up off it and post your next record time with comparable advantages.
