NSX Time Attack Event November 3-4

No matter in what or how Billy,
It will be great to have you there with us !
Jim

Time to beef it up?
Not to worry guys, if I make it out it'll be for fun, ride with some of you (ask Lance -NSXalot), possibly do some demo laps but not to 'compete' against you guys for bragging rights. Hope to see you there!

Well I am definitely in for being a spectator and riding with someone at the track.

I'll definitely be there. :) Wooo!

It think anyone should be allowed to race their NSX regardless if they are a "pro -driver" or not. Bring the best thats out there, put them all head to head, and see who is fastest. The unlimited wheel to wheel class i think should be those that are comfortable losing a fender or two and understanding that is part of the game. Most that fall into that category are "pro-drivers", people trying to be pro-drivers, or those that are neither but have lots of money to buy body parts....
I would like this event to be fun and at the same time worthy enough competition for magazine coverage.

I disagree.

In general, from what I've seen most of these tuner style time attacks reveal the fastest drivers on a particular track configuration/conditions, not necessarily the fastest/best prepared cars or most adept tuners anyway.

To me most of these timed events show that the fundamentals are what counts most. You get a driver that has logged enough track miles on the course and match him up with a good support crew; chances are that team would whip on most of the participants in their run group (thinking in a neon from Enterprise) before taking podium 1st overall in a stock ride with maybe just the pads and RA1 mod. That just seems to me to be the cold hard reality.

For the spectators...

They need to understand that if you want to know what [car] is fastest a series of acceleration, braking, skid pad, and top speed tests will for the most part bear that out everything else being equal. To properly evaluate lap times on a road course top gear style and translate that back to vehicle you'll need one good consistent driver open lapping and that is about impossible to ascertain here being outside the scope of this type of event.

Now, if you want to know what [driver + car] is the fastest to show-up that day with absolutely no regard to anything else.... sure then just run a time-attack like most of the other organizers do as it makes a great dog and pony show.

I was jesting.....I was just paying the guy a compliment. But I still do think it would unfair if a pro was competing against amateurs. But hey its all in good fun and he can be the guy setting the pace to match or beat.

I agree completely and I am puzzled by why others would have it any other way.

If vendor X thinks that their ego and customers would be best served by putting a pro driver in their ride (likely needing to be defined as having ever participated in a sanctioned racing series) so their ride doesn't look stupidly slow, they are probably right and their is a place for that. However this specific event as I understand it isn't a commercial magazine shoot out and nothing of value is on the line here. It's just a little peon club event and shouldn't be made more than it is, so that it can be universally enjoyed by all.

Getting vendors to pull in pro drivers and stick them in their cars for club level time attacks - or hanging in the trailer with a five person pit crew with tire warmers - all just so they can look good at a lowly club event is frankly pretty ridiculous IMO and not in the spirit of the event. When I see guys like GST show up at lowly club events I am always like WTF are you doing here?

Thus, I also concur the the owners should have to drive and reasonably prepare their own car for the competition portion of the event.

For one, people should win on their own dollar and merits. Most of the owners are just average guys. Many owners have boat loads of time and cash into their rides and they should probably see a change of scenery and finally get something out of it that is genuinely personally rewarding for them. How it is that some people find that having someone else 'win' anything in their car is some-how rewarding or means they won something I have no idea. Which leads to my second point...

Two, if you want respect you have to earn it. Maybe the unknowing newbies in the community buy-up these vendor 'wins' up... but anyone that has ever been to a indoor go cart track knows that it is hard these days to even so much as find two equal 5hp go carts so cutting lose a bunch of un-tech'd tuner cars with various pro drivers in these huge loosely defined classes proves nothing to me other than available money/credit and/or desired appendage size.

As a consequence... some of the vendors are probably going to be no-show under this format because the only way they can make a good showing is by scoring a driver.

The bottom line is that unless you constrain variables, what is the point? Their is a reason why SCCA exists. I for one commend Mark's approach as the organizer by knocking out all that stupid shit up front in his FAQ.

John are you making fun of us and our lack of driving skill?

Hehe... Not at all, I've never seen you guys run how would I know? I didn't say anything about FX in there.

Just saying that some people are into fast cars and some people are into fast drivers. When you put them together you definitely buy yourself the best showing... which is the means for a lot of vendors at events- you know whatever you got to do.

I just think on the club level at small regional events it should be kept comparable and in the spirit so everyone has a good time. I don't care if a pro driver did bring his race car out just so they get grouped accordingly if something seems off and doesn't pass the sniff test.

All that or... well every advantage counts so stack your cards, right? I didn't see anything in the FAQ... is their any online form we can fill out or some way to protest FX's race car in advance and get a complete tear down pre-inspection in advance?? Id be willing to help out putting it back together then if needed before running back over to the showroom stock category.

John... Isnt the point of an unlimited wheel to wheel time attack to have a competition? Im not a pro-driver by any means but im not afraid of them either, as long as they own the vehicle they are driving.

Sounds more like the idea is "open passing" lapping session for who can go the fastest rather than 'wheel to wheel racing'.

Thier is no checkered flag, just competing against the time. Yes incidents do happen but I think most of the owners would rather not have a quarter panel dented in...

it is always nice when someone reads the event group rules before posting.

the longer version is HERE.

the short version:

there is no "mano a mano" racing at this event. The track was very specific about what we can do and what we cannot do based on the support services we asked for - so was I. Open passing in the advanced run group is hardly "fender to fender racing" - anyone behaving badly in practice will be ejected by the track marshals, and they have the final say about it. I plan on spending some time on the track and not officiating the whole time.

There IS a solo car racing against the clock event on Sunday. We're calling it a "Time Attack" - hopefully it will not result in any personal attacks..

If you guys that can afford to bounce off each other want to have a race - rent the track and invite us.

I disagree.

How it is that some people find that having someone else 'win' anything in their car is some-how rewarding or means they won something I have no idea.

I have an idea that if I had worked for months to fix a NSX to go fast while stay in one piece then it came in first, I would feel proud. Both driving and tuning can be a kick. It's all good.

I agree. I think it is whatever makes owners happy. Simply stating my own wares.

Obviously some get their satisfaction from building it out and seeing it run well. I don't know that a time attack is necessarily the best format to exemplify that particularly given the limited number of runs but sure I can see that. Some just want to see their ride in magazines. Some use them to drum up business or egos. Others just want to look at it at a car show and yet still others need to win a race or something. Obviously people enjoy their rides differently and I respect that.

I don't care about being overly vocal here so I'll take the risk of sounding like little club whiner b$*tch... but to me, unless you have the resources to field pro I think on the club level it is all about fun and the policies at any type of small club regional competitive event should reflect that mantra.

Their are any number of drivers that are faster than me and their always will be because their is another level past the one you just conquered in your small world.

Personally, I like using other drivers for continued calibration during open lapping to see how fast or slow I am. However in general personally I don't get anything out of footing the bill and just sticking someone else in my fifty or hundred grand car, crossing my fingers, and seeing them run faster then me because I'm not a paid team manager. If you need to do that at an event or something sure.. but to me, overall that's just not what it is all about.

A good magazine article to me is hearing about my peers getting better year in and year out and doing well or how they stack among themselves, not hey look my car ran a X.XX with a rolex driver and destroyed the tuner field on Hoosier drys.

To give you an idea where my perspective comes from it had nothing to do with FX or the red line events although I see why maybe that was inferred from my earlier post.

I found it a little 'off' that Matrix and Stasis Integrated shows up to local Audi event with a full pit crew then runs against a bunch of local guys just trying to have a good time. Still later Crawford coming out with Hoosier Drys and Cosworth engines with Motec running against kids in their tuner STI's. Granted team AR lost by a 1/10th of a second that day with a stock ride but the whole event organization left a sour taste it my mouth for the tuner style time attacks in general. Too many variables.

Hey if they want to come out and open lap sure, or the field is filled with other similar race prepped vehicles sure... but in general that's not what I see. More often what I see is local guys in normal sedans with maybe some Tein's and FI getting spanked on by 5 seconds a lap. So it's kind of like if those types of advantages shouldn't be seen as a big deal and that's the way they feel about it then get up off it and post your next record time with comparable advantages.

Exactly...The practice sessions are open passing in the TA group. The actual TA event is timed laps with 1 car on the track at a time.

"Time Attack (12 cars max) with unlimited passing. In other words; that’s “fender-to-fender” in case it’s not clear to you.
The fender-to-fender action is currently limited to the PRACTICE sessions only on Saturday (all day) and Sunday am."

And I'm all for NOT having any of my quarter panels dented in

I agree with you John. As Mark and I put this idea together, we had many discussions on this very subject. Which is why we decided you have to "own what you drive" Otherwise it turns it into something else. It's suppose to be about owners and their NSX's coming out and having fun and everyone going home in one piece. It's not to be a win at any cost situation.

Absolutely....

I am the one that booked the track and because of my relationship with Firebird Management & Officials, we were able to do away with a couple of things that usually are required by the track for any fender to fender track time. I gave the powers to be at Firebird my word this open passing group would be limited to 12 cars, NOT A RACE, and would not turn into one at anytime. "IT'S PRACTICE" with total respect to all the other cars and drivers that share the track with you. Since I have been involved with several events at Firebird and they know I can be a real dick when it comes to safety, my word was enough with them to allow this to happen for the TA group to "PRACTICE" Fender to Fender-Open Passing" without the normal restraints or requirements. I do not want my credibility or the NSX community in general dogged by anyone of us at Firebird since I live here and have great relationship with Firebird Management. So believe me, it's not going to happen by anyone attending.

When the actual TA event happens on Sunday, then you can drive like a madman since you will be only endangering yourself and not be taking anyone with you if your foot overloads your ass.......

Rich, (Firebird Boss) myself, Mark and the all the Marshals will be watching very closely. If there's any nutcase, overly aggressive or stupid driving by anyone during the practice runs, they will be black flagged and their racing is done for the weekend. There will be a NO TOLERANCE policy for any stupidity. Doesn't matter who you are, who you think you are, or represent. This goes for everyone taking the track in any group, specially the TA group.

Personally, I love to drive fast. But I also know there's always going to be someone faster & better skilled. No big deal, I'm out there to have fun and go home in one piece with my car intact. No matter how many cars I have to wave by me. There's no money to be won and this is not life and death....So let's just have fun with this...

And that's what this event is all about.....We do a good job out there with this one, we can do many more. It's going to take all of us working together and watching out for each other to make sure this happens.

I know this is what everyone wants as well, at least I hope so anyway....
