just wondering...

which car is the faster car 0-60 mph: a stock 97+ NSX-T vs a NSX 91 with I/H/E

/Stef

The 91 is faster because it is lighter than the 97-T version. I think I've read that the 97-T does 0-60 in 5.7 seconds while the 91 coupes can do it in 5.2 seconds.

That's not at all true. Stock, the '97 NSX-T does 0-60 in 4.8 to 4.9 seconds, while the '91 coupes are 5.2 to 5.3, according to magazine test figures in the FAQ.

Bob Butler's analysis is consistent with the magazine test figures. It says, if you add 15 hp (a typical amount for I/H/E mods) to a '91, the 0-60 time drops from 5.31 to 5.00 seconds. His analysis also shows the 0-60 time for a '97 NSX-T as 4.93 seconds. So the answer is, the '97 is still slightly faster than the modified '91.

And keep in mind that the 97, with its redesigned exhaust manifolds, has most of benefits of headers anyway.

The intake and exhaust part of the changes have minimal affect on performance.

The 6 speed might also help somewhat, although I haven't checked the numbers.

In real-world testing (read: monthly club drives), my '91 with I/H/E and short gears hangs with newer cars all day long. Remember, they're all NSXes and in the twisties, handling and driver ability is paramount.

Although the question asked about 0-60. Doh!

Chops,

That might be, but it doesn't really help to answer the original question. It could very well be the case that if you were to drive the later model car that you would pull away from the pack.

Either way, we're not talking a big difference here, probably on the order of 5-10%.

Ken,

The question asked about a '91 with only I/H/E, not a '91 with I/H/E and short gears.

According to Bob's analysis, 15 hp reduces the 0-60 times by 0.31 second, and short gears reduce 0-60 times by 0.22 second. The combination of both I/H/E and short gears could indeed make a '91 quicker from 0 to 60 than a '97 NSX-T.

However, the '97 could still be generally quicker than the modded '91 above 60 mph, where the short gears tend to hurt, rather than help.

Of course, Jimbo is also correct in stating that these differences of a couple of tenths of a second are what can be theoretically achieved, and they are so small that they are likely to be less than differences in driver skill as well as variability from one run to another.

Ken, I know. I also forgot to read that the question just referred only to 0-60 times. But being the know-all that I am, I thought that I may just as well get in my 2 cents and tell him how I feel.

Hey, I love my '91!

i love YOUR '91's too!

If the Matrix is real, then the NSX is just a figment of your imagination.

If you have a coupe - remove a couple hundred pounds, get a Dali Hot Chip, I/H/E, upgrade the brakes and suspension and you will have one HOT NSX for little $$$.

At least that is what I did and I love it.

Also - NSXs of the same year and no mods often dyno with a large difference in HP on the same dyno day so it is hard to say who would be faster with what.
