Several reasons made me decide to do this widebody project.AU_NSX said:Thank you very much for the photographs and documented write-up of the re-build!
One question I do have is what prompted you to do the widebody?
Was it for performance at the track or was it more cosmetic...
The reason I ask is that most widebody panels weigh more than the OEM Aluminium ones so most widebody conversions are more for show cars and not normally race cars like yours... But a widebody NSX will be able to fit wider wheels on it as well.... Hence my question Gerard. (I know about JGTC cars all being widebody but they have different suspensions and well different everything to the road cars...)
1. Most obvious was, that I had to repair the damage. As you know,
aluminum parts are very expensive and most of the time very difficult to
repair. These parts are easy to repair;
2. Because of my BBK I couldn't go wider than 210x610x17 (the first two
figures are in mm) with my slick front tires and 215x40x17 or 215x35x18
with street front tires. Now I can go to 230 and even 240 with slick tires
in front and 235 or 245 with street tires.
3. The weight part is important, but not that important. The benefits of more
grip are bigger than the few lost pounds. The oem aluminum parts are
a bit lighter, but overall not much. We're only talking about the
fenders. The oem bumpers are plastic already.
Before the widebody conversion, my NSX weighted 1,292kg with 1/2 load
of fuel. Now it weighs about 1,300kg;
4. The cosmetic part I find also important. I like the looks of a widebody NSX.
And if I can mix a little bit of gain in grip and loose a little bit in weight,
but win in looks, I am a very happy person.
