I agree with much of what you say. However, both sides share the blame. Now the owners have the upper hand, and for the good of the league (what's left of it) they need it. The fact of the matter is that a 24% reduction in salaries would not have brought the teams into the black. By not playing this season, the owners actually saved money. That's a sad business environment! Sure, the owners have only themselves to blame for letting it get that way, but the players have to wake up and smell the coffee. Locally, the Blues, for two years now, have made available their books to the players at any time they wanted to review the fiscal realities. No player has bothered to review them.
Here's the big problem as I see it: I firmly believe that if the players were offered a league-wide vote on what the owners have offered, they would have overwhelmingly accepted. I think the players representation is only representing the voice of a small majority of the players - the elite 10-20%. At least locally, now we have some of the good young players playing for the local UHL team, and for a mere pittance of what they would be earning, $1,000 per month.
