NHL sustains another self inflicted concussion....

I agree with much of what you say. However, both sides share the blame. Now the owners have the upper hand, and for the good of the league (what's left of it) they need it. The fact of the matter is that a 24% reduction in salaries would not have brought the teams into the black. By not playing this season, the owners actually saved money. That's a sad business environment! Sure, the owners have only themselves to blame for letting it get that way, but the players have to wake up and smell the coffee. Locally, the Blues, for two years now, have made available their books to the players at any time they wanted to review the fiscal realities. No player has bothered to review them.

Here's the big problem as I see it: I firmly believe that if the players were offered a league-wide vote on what the owners have offered, they would have overwhelmingly accepted. I think the players representation is only representing the voice of a small majority of the players - the elite 10-20%. At least locally, now we have some of the good young players playing for the local UHL team, and for a mere pittance of what they would be earning, $1,000 per month.

of course both sides are to blame, hell we might as well crucify OURSELVES[ the fans and other quasi-believers] for enabling these malcontents!!! what is incredible of the owners is they would accept loss of the season uber alles. they still suck.

as a trained professional[ not unlike a hockey player], i trained above and beyond to be who i am. and i have no prob charging a hill of beans for my healthcare[ with a 98.8% collection rate for fee for service/ no managed care dental practice....i also enjoy giving collection wedgies to that 1% deadbeat crowd...i'm digressing.]we all earn what we reap.

though gooodenow went over the player heads, & stepped on toes, he's representing a union of men[and their families]. big [sloppy]capitalistic pigs[a pun on washington fans...] would chew up players in a second, if they were divided up as individuals. i am all for the rights of the little people/young players.

kgp, i appreciate the dialogue!!STL loves its franchise, and they've responded with i believe the longest post-season playoff streak in sports

i would love to hear the feelings from canada, coyots, bluejackets markets right now!!

there is a link to NHL payrolls...

I would have to agree that the owners are the ones to blame when they began a bidding war with each other to escalate the players salary...But at the same time players have used arbitration to get un precedented salary hikes, but all that is the past now....The owners have realized and paid for the mistake.

I agree with the owners trying to get a cap of 35 million US per team..I thought 42 million was stretching it. I live in what is consider a "small market franchise". If there was no cap in place, many NHL teams would eventually fold and players would be out of work. If the NHL team didnt fold, all they would be are farms teams for the bigger budget teams. The problem with teams like the Oilers is that we have a community that loves hockey and attends games, but we just don't have the population to support tickets prices being $180-300 USD for seats or the effects of currency exchange. Some might say survival of the fittest here, but does anyone really want to see a team that has won 5 stanley cups and produced many future and present hall famers fold?. A 49 million soft cap presented by the NHLPA only affects 8 NHL teams currently. Teams like the Oilers and the Flames aren't even close to the soft cap with their present payroll and probably couldn't get their player salaries to anywhere near that level. I have seen the Oilers lose too many great players simply due to the fact that they can't afford them. (Doug Weight, Curtis Joseph, Bill Guerin, etc) and will more than likely not ever to competitive to win another Stanley cup or make it deep into the playoffs unless a low cap was in place. I thought it was wonderful to see the Flames come within 1 game of winning it all last year. The "Kipper" was relatively an unknown sensation with a relatively low salary. Now that he is known for being a great goaltender, how much will he demand for a salary?

This lockout hurts all sides. The only people that are getting paid are coaches, GMs and scouting staff. I really don't understand how average NHL players that are currently not making anything right now, can complain about having a salary of say 600,000 USD.

[Pipe organ music] Oh when the Blues come marching in... [/ Pipe organ music] There are some die-hards here, but nothing like some of the Canadian cities. Much better than the Vancouver fans though. That place put me to sleep. Probably only St. Louisans will understand this: What in the world is towel man doing with himself these days? That guy has to be fit to be tied.

And along with $3.50 we can get a Starbucks....but not drink it from Lord Stanley's cup!

is the patient still alive????????????????????????????

don't you love being strung out?????

i hope if/when this mess is cleaned up the owners give
back the 300 million dollar war chest they're using
2004/2005, to the fans they stole it from.

btw, these short seasons don't count, right??
and the devils have only won 2 cups......
