Here!

Looks good. Still a little conservative. But not bad at all.

EDIT: after looking at again. I love it! Couple notes:

- Interior is AWESOME!
- Hmmm...I see some beautiful 4 pot calipers behind those wheels.
- No listing of HP yet.

I think this is finally the car I've been looking for to replace the Legend with. Good job Acura.

EDIT #2, Press Release from American Honda.

New York 04/07/2004 -- The Acura Prototype RL luxury performance sedan made its world debut today at the New York International Auto Show. With a 300 horsepower VTEC V-6 engine, a revolutionary all-wheel-drive system, dynamic styling and breakthrough technology, including real time traffic information, the RL Prototype is designed to redefine the luxury performance sedan category. The RL Prototype provides a preview of the direction in which Acura is taking the all-new 2005 RL luxury performance sedan, which will be introduced this fall.

"The RL Prototype really makes a statement about Acura's focus on performance," said Dick Colliver, executive vice president, sales. "When you combine the high output engine, the sport tuned chassis and Acura's revolutionary all-wheel-drive system, you get a driving experience that other cars in its class just cannot match."

The Super-Handling All-Wheel-Drive System' (SH-AWD') is the first and only all-wheel-drive platform that distributes the optimum amount of torque not only between the front and rear wheels but also between the left and right rear wheels. During straight line cruising and moderate cornering, up to 70 percent of torque is at the front wheels. During full throttle acceleration or spirited driving, up to 70 percent of available torque goes to the rear wheels for increased acceleration and enhanced cornering. In addition to varying the torque front to rear, SH-AWD varies the amount of torque to the left and right rear wheels. When cornering, this ground-breaking technology overdrives the outer rear wheel, sending up to 100 percent of rear torque to that wheel to dramatically enhance the RL's cornering, steering feel, handling and stability. The result is class-leading cornering performance and cornering stability as well as enhanced traction on dry or wet surfaces.

The RL Prototype's 3.5-liter, 24-valve, all-aluminum VTEC engine generates 300 horsepower and meets LEV2-ULEV emissions standards. It is mated to a 5-speed Sequential SportShift automatic transmission that enables gears to be shifted using the shift lever on the center console or with the F1"-type paddle shifters located on the steering wheel.

To further complement the high output engine and all-wheel-drive system, Acura gave the RL Prototype a highly rigid unit body that is lightweight due in large part to aluminum construction of the sub frame, suspension, hood, trunk, and front fenders.

The RL Prototype is the first Acura equipped with the Advanced Compatibility Engineering' (ACE') body structure, designed to enhance passenger safety. ACE uses a new frame structure that helps to disperse collision forces over a larger frontal area than in non ACE-equipped vehicles. The system helps deliver even better protection for vehicle occupants while at the same time reducing aggressivity toward other vehicles in a frontal collision.

The RL Prototype's lightweight chassis and 4-wheel independent suspension components are tuned to complement the SH-AWD system and deliver a linear cornering feel, optimum cornering traction and a smooth ride. The 20-inch alloy wheels are shod with 255/35R20 Michelin high performance tires that fill the wheel wells and add to the RL Prototype's aggressive stance. Large brakes with 4-piston brake calipers and slotted rotors provide optimum stopping power.

The RL's sleek exterior styling reflects the power under the hood. It is shorter, and wider than the current RL with a wide, muscular stance, yet offers more passenger volume than the current model. In front, a dramatically sloping hood leads down to an aggressive front fascia with angular headlight treatments, a signature Acura five-sided grill and distinctive lower air intake openings. A sleek cockpit, a forward sloping beltline and a short deck lid accent the RL Prototype's pronounced wedge shape, making it look fast from any angle.

The RL Prototype features the Adaptive Front Lighting System (AFS) for increased illumination and visibility. The low beams swivel up to 20 degrees in either direction in response to vehicle speed and input from the steering wheel. During straight-line driving the headlights perform like conventional systems by illuminating the road directly in front of the vehicle. When entering a curve, they swivel according to steering input and vehicle speed sensors to illuminate a larger area of road surface throughout the corner, thus minimizing blind spots.

Inside, the RL Prototype is as luxurious as it is sporty. The interior features rich leather, genuine wood trim, an assortment of leading-edge technology and, for the first time in a North American vehicle, standard real time traffic information integrated into a new in-car satellite-based navigation system featuring AcuraLink'. Utilizing the XM NavTraffic service beamed from XM's satellites, the RL Prototype's 8-inch navigation screen can display a variety of up-to-the-minute traffic information where available including flow (traffic speed), accidents, and construction on freeways in 20 major metro areas including Los Angeles, New York and Chicago. Flow and accident information are updated continuously, allowing drivers to take the least congested route to their destination.

In addition to enabling the real time traffic feature, the AcuraLink Satellite-Based Communication System allows for communication between Acura and the vehicle, providing customers with the latest diagnostic information specific to their vehicle as well as vehicle-related messages. Because it is linked to the car's HandsFreeLink' wireless telephone interface, drivers can respond to messages or one-touch-dial Acura dealers and Acura Roadside Assistance (TLC) using their Bluetooth phone.

The RL Prototype also features a premium 10-speaker Acura/Bose(R) DVD-Audio system, tuned to deliver surround sound to all seating positions.

The RL Prototype is the first vehicle equipped with the Acura Keyless Access System', which allows owners to lock and unlock doors, open the trunk, and start the car without using a key.

The RL Prototype incorporates an assortment of the latest safety systems and devices including a full complement of front, side and side curtain air bags, as well as Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA').

If those pics are accurate, it looks way too much like an Accord. I like the new TL 10x more. Perhaps the pics don't do the car justice and my opinion will change when I can see it in person.

Front End could have been morew aggressive..

300hp V-6 VTEC....that has to be single cam.

NSX is going to make a lot of power :)

Headlights/grille say "Impala". Interior says "Enterprise" (OK, that's not a bad thing, it looks very luxurious, it's just those Acura emblems everywhere that make it look like it was built by Starfleet). :D

The side and rear stlying is bland overall but has some nice touches which liven it up a little: eg. the exhaust tips, the front wheel fender flares. However this is a criticism levelled at most of the current luxury sedans. Overall, nice looking car though. If it can run with the big dogs in performance and driving satisfaction (BMW 5 series, M-B E500, Lexus LS430), it ought to do alright.

I think it is gorgeous!!!

Wow!!!

It doesn't look much bigget than the TL at all??

THe interior is freaking amazing..

looks good. Just don't know if the looks are up market enough for a Flagship. i.e. looks a bit too much like the tsx, TL in the front, and side profile.

I saw the New RL yesterday ... I love the car itself and it looks pretty good....im just disappointed that its not bigger like the legend or a 745 or MB S500. It did not look any larger then there present TL but the features were amazing and I want one now. It comes with keyless entry and start and adaptive headlight system as well as a navigation system that gives you on time traffic conditions so they say. I posted some Low Res shots of the Press show which i took yesterday as I was working the show.

I have to agree here. The pics make it look the same size as the TL. I think it needs to be roughly the same dimensions as the LS430.

In the press release it says it is shorter than the current RL, but has more interior space. Does that mean it has less trunk space?

Anyway, I think I want one too... :)

the prototype specs and more photos are now on acura.com

imo, acura miss the market again. No body really bought the previous rl since it was pretty much equilvalent to the previous tl and the tl looked better...same situation now.

I don't care for the exterior but the interior is nice at least. The exterior is ok but it doesn't give a sense of luxury which is present in the interior.

Nice interior but, 1996 to 2004 and thats all they come up with for styling. As a former Legend and RL owner it does nothing for me. I'll wait to pass final judgement when I see it in person but like other have said;:(

It looks "nice", but not great. It does look an awful lot like an Accord, except for the interior, which is phenomenal.

In USA Today, they mentioned the new RL and said it would be priced around $50k. That's a pretty good bump up from the current model, which Gunn Acura was willing to sell for $36k to move them out. $50k and I'm probably looking elsewhere....$40k would make more sense in the pricing hierarchy over the TL.

I know the TL will still eat it's lunch in sales, just like the G35 does to both the M45 and the Q45. Why pay that much more for marginally bigger? If VW (and others) can go way upmarket in price and size, Acura should be able to take advantage of other marques and have a content-loaded luxury flagship (of the right dimensions) and sell it for less. Since when has that concept not worked? I believe that is what made Lexus successful in the beginning, and what is currently creating huge sales for both the TL and G35 - more for less, not less for more.

Anyway, what the hell do I know? :D

The car probably looks much better in person. Here are some other angle shots. (From CarDesignNews.com)

The RL looks hot in those two pics... :D Wheels still look a bit bulky though... :(

I would like to see it next to a LS430, GS430 and the 530 and E-calss..

I was at a press release rehersal for the RL and I can tell you that the car is about the same size as the 530 or E-class but no where near the other two cars you mentioned.....if you go to my auto show cam post you can see the new rl on display at the show.

It's not a bad looking car, but I don't think it looks like anything from Honda, the whole car design goes very good in Toyota line up. (Corolla, Camry, this new RL belongs in same family.)

But what's up with the BMW Humpback?? Isn't that way too obvious that Honda is running out ideas??

It certainly doesn't look like it's going to be in Acura lineup, especially parking next to a TSX and TL... The lines are way too soft. Oh well, I guess Honda is not mean to be making Family faced cars...

That's why we have the NSX :D

I think the car is beautiful.......

Hey guys, this is Honda, we all should know what to expect. They are conservative, did anyone really think the car was gonna go from present day RL to a car as big as the 7 series?? I would love to see it just as much as the next guy, but it's just the nature of the company. Don't know why, just is, time and time again throughout the years I have wondered certain things......

why get rid of the CRX, the Civic Real-Time4wd wagon
why no big HP numbers in the Prelude to compete with Toyota, and Nissan
why 290hp in flagship Acura
why no rear drive model available
why use a damn Rodeo as a Honda
why badge the RSX as an Acura (car is too civic like to carry the Acura badge)
why destroy the legend coupe
Why offer one engine in the new RL and make it the same size as a 5 series

I have tons of other questions, but have learned over the years to say, oh well!! That's Honda, and I still love the cars.

My question is this...

I thought the TSX competes with the 3-Series..

I would only compare my TL with the 5-Series

But the RL is set to compete with the 5-Series...

I don't get it..

I know the Magazines are comparing a TL to the 3-series, but after owning both cars, I don't think that is right.

To me, the TL is a better car than a 530... maybe not a 545..

When the Legend (Now RL) first came out in 86 it was meant to compete against the 5 series. I would say the RL still is intended to compete with the 5 series as it is not close enough to the 7 series. On the same note, I think it competes against the Lexus GS430 rather than the LS430. The Vigor (Now TL) used to be closer to the 3 series but it always fell way short. The new 04 TL seems to be a perfect competitor now though. The TSX is kind of an odd ball as I'm not sure what it competes against. I guess the 3 series as well, but probably closer to the 325 vs 330. The TSX does compete against the IS300 and maybe the Audi A4 (Non Turbo). I guess now the lines are blurred as they are moving toward performance sport luxury cars rather than just pure luxury, or sport/performance. If Honda is coppied that trunk lines from the BMW, all I have to say is they actually got it right while BMW failed:D Somehow it looks okay on the RL but but ugly on the BMW.

Eitherway, I like the new RL. I like conservative mild styled cars anyway. The new 5 series is just plain ugly to me. I've seen them on the road and it doesn't get any better. If I were looking for a 4 door luxury car my only two choices right now would be the new Lexus GS430 and this new RL. The AWD in the RL is very attractive, but the Lexus might be just a step up over all. I would have to test drive them to decide :D
