New to the site, just purchased a '91 NSX from a good friend. 74K miles, decent shape. New t-belt, clutch. '95 16/17 seven spoke wheels, plus original '91 15/16 five spoke wheels came with Yoko A032R's.
Car has RM slotted rotors and Carbotech street/track pad (don't know which model). ATE Blue fluid.
First time with this car at Sebring today. I got lucky today as my student (911 Turbo Convertible!!!) left after just one 1/2 hour session. So I had the rest of the day free. Geez, this car can "make some MPH"! (I'm used to driving this track in my '94 Miata.)
I had to change my lines at lot. Even though I knew better, I kept turning in too soon. In the Miata turning in a little early is OK since momentum needs to be maintained, and flat-footing the throttle just after turn-in doesn't really do anything untoward. But with the NSX, I needed a little later apex so I can really hammer the throttle sooner and straighter. Started to "get it", but had to cut my day short.
The rotors were shuddering pretty badly the second time out. Also, after about 25 minutes, needed to use the escape road going into turn 10. Drove the rest of the lap at 5/10ths, let everything start to cool down. Obviously, didn't cool it down enough. I usually drive around the paddock about 5 minutes, but this time I stopped after I came of the track to talk with someone. Brakes at this point just heat soaked. Went to go to my pit stall, and the pedal was on the floor. (Had to use the handbrake!)
Waited about 1/2 hour and the pedal came up. Didn't bleed them as I didn't bring any tools with me, but they were fine after that for driving home.
So, that all said, I suppose it really is time for some fresh fluid. I'm a fan of Motul 600. I'm also going to go down to Cobalt this weekend, maybe, talk with them, see what they have. I've read here (FAQ) all about brakes. Seems like the hot ticket is RM slotted rotors and pads. But I just LOVE the Spec Miata pads from Cobalt I've been using on that car; it's worth a discussion with them.
Time for new rotors, too as these seemed pretty beat up.
Had a good time in the car. Had to play with tire pressures. The previous owner told me what he had used as cold PSI with those tires, but car was very "oversteery", both under power and braking. Tires felt like they were overinflated, and indeed they were. Dropped pressure and it felt great. Got a little more comfortable with the car, but never felt good about the brakes. Gonna have to experiment.
Anyways, thanks for reading this far. What a car!
