A magazine in Japan has published pictures of (yes another concept) the new nsx, saying it will debut in 2008. I didnt buy the mag so no pics, sorry!
It looks like a cross between a lambo murci body style, with a gallardo rear light assembly and an intergrated nsx spoiler design. Magazine mentioned again the v6 3.5 engine. I may try and get pics later if anyone is interested.

I am interested, though not in a 3.5L v6 :(

is it this one you are talking about? what is the name of the magazine?

from my understanding the magazine says that the production of the new NSX was delay, cause honda changed plan on the engine output. either very high output V6 or Honda first V8.

No, completely different concept pics.

I'll grab the mag tonight post some info tomorrow and pics on wednesday.:)

If in 2008, Honda is still so stubborn to stick a V6 in their next generation supercar, I'll be really disappointed. I don't think anyone will take the new NSX seriously as an exotic with a V6, regardless of how well Honda can make it perform. With so much racing heritage, Honda really needs to go all out for the next NSX, imo.

Just got car and driver in the mail. Jan 05 issue

P42. "Japan Dumps 276hp Pact"

quote- Acura will again cross the line with a new NSX with at least 400 horses,

who knows... at lease it is from C&D.

HSC,

Those pics looks very good. I've always like the front design of the HSC. And the rear just got better even though its an artist impression. Damn...can't wait.

This is an old news. Anyway, I don't believe these hoaks from Japanese mags. How many times have they claimed something about the new NSX in the last 2 years? Like 5-6 times? I'll believe it when I see it from Honda.

For many I'm sure this is the case, and I certainly see the appeal in the sight, sound and power of big displacement 10s/12s. But more cylinders may mean more parts, weight and size. A six cylinder helps keep weight close to the center of the car for a lower polar moment. They can also provide substantial power, as in some Porsche models.

Car design involves compromise and I suspect there's a lot of us out here that would trade off some power & top speed for less weight & better handling. I'm not trying to say a six is necessarily the best compromise, it's just that I wouldn't rule a car out as an exotic simply because it had a six.

Bought the mag last night. Its called 'holiday auto' (its written in Katakana though, 'horide-o-to') They have been pretty good in their scoop info. I posted from this mag with some hsc info last year. No idea how correct it is, just thought it would be nice to for you guys to get the rumours straight from the Japanese rumour mill!

Anyways;
Weight 1345 kilograms
Dimensions 4340x1780x1285mm
wheel base 2450mm
mid engine v6 dohc, 3471cc (not decided, read below)
ps/rpm 340/6800
kgm/rpm 37.5/4500
six speed manual transmission (sequential)
double wishbone suspension
Brembo 4piston up front brembo two piston on the rear
225/40r18 (8jx18)
255/35r18 (9jx18)

The article mentions it has taken time with the new nsx development as they were weighing up various decisions such as cost, which brands the nsx would compete against in the market place and research into next generation fuel sources. The most important consideration was cost. Supposedly it will be around six million yen. At first they were targeting ferrari but now are swaying towards lotus and mainly porsche. The nsx platform is to be a steel base with a mainly carbon fibre shell. The engine is to be positioned further towards the rear for better balance. The base model will be released in 2008 with body options similar to the porsche 911 available a few years later ie: open convertible, targa.

The hsc was never meant to be the next nsx, but a platform for some new concepts. It was considered to be too big for what honda was wanting. Engine options are still in discussion, but a turbo'd 3.6l/3.7l is also being discussed (maybe as options or in the base model)

The magazine also had some info on the new skyline gt-r and toyota 4500 gt.
It has some spy shots of the toyota being driven ono the road. It looks like a monster of a car! 1380kg with 485ps @ 8500rpm v10 dohc! I'm going with netviper on this one, this what the nsx engine should be :D
The skyline gt-r looks pretty ugly but has some power. v6 dohc twin turbo, 1390kg 480ps @7200 rpm and 20inch wheels!

I'll post pics tomorrow :)

It's very hard for me to belive that the next NSX will only have about 340hp. TOYOTA and NISSAN can build 480hp monsters for about $70~100k, why can't HONDA???

HONDA has always been on top of Japanese sports car market in Japan, no matter what other competition came up with, HONDA will beat them with something better, for example the NSX type-r. I will say, no less than 420hp and super light weight for the next NSX.

BTW, V10 and only weights 1380kg for TOYOTA super car? WOW!

Thanks :) I agree. That is an exotic powerplant.

A 3.5L V6 with 340HP @ 6800 RPM is less than the new M3 will have at 2x the cost. Doesn't exactly sound like a formula for success to me. Surely they can do better than that. If it is a 3.7L turbo, it had better be well over 450HP.

I wouldn't care if it Honda used an I4 rather than V6... The final performance is all that matters IMO. If Honda would match the specific output of the S2000, they could have over 400hp out of a 3.5L V6. Either iVTEC or VTEC would keep the torque up I'd much rather they made the FX500 the standard engine. V8 is a cop out. Worthless engine for an MR platform IMO.

That said, I've been secretly hoping Honda would use a V10 or V12 with a 10,000-15,000rpm redline. THAT would be cool. :)

The more I think about it, the more I'm expecting SH-AWD to be on the next NSX, at least in all of the non Type-R trims... and maybe even then...

That would be totally worthless to drive on the street.

I don't think they will have a 3.5 DOHC engine with only 340HP in 2008. Here is my opinion why. The 05 RL uses a 3.5 SOHC VTEC engine making 300HP. Add DOHC VTEC and giving past Honda engines it should make at least 40HP more than the SOHC version. That would make it inline with the predicted 340HP DOHC NSX engine, but that would also mean ZERO engine development in 3 years. The RL now switched over to the J spec engine which came out in 98. That means if they use a variation of this engine in 2008 it would already be 10 years old. If they are developing a brand new engine for the 2008 NSX, than surely it would be much more powerful than the J spec RL engine or why develope a new one at all?

Another thing that doesn't make too much sense is using a steel chassis. The 05 RL uses an aluminum chassis I believe with some minor carbon fiber parts and alimunim body pannels. Why would Honda then use a steel chassis for their sports car? They want to keep cost down but the RL already MSRPs for nearly $50K. It seems like Honda is finially advancing their family Sedan, but they are going to move backwards with their next NSX? I find that hard to believe.

maybe the steel frame is a clue that the engine will be 400 HP or greater.
imagine a viper with an aluminum frame. it would twist.

Actually, I have a better point. Do you know what a pain in the ass it is to get an NSX race certified (SCCA or otherwise) without a roll cage welded in? Al frames suck in this regard. Steel frame with CF body is the way to go IMO.

The brochure for the new RL says they used aluminum for some parts (hood, suspension, subframes, etc), magnesium (front seat frmaes, engine valve covers) and "high-tensile" steel in "crucial areas" to enhance strength while minimize overall mass.

Netviper, I heartily disagree. 9000rpm is more than manageable... 10,000 wouldn't be unreasonable. 15,000 might be, but that's part of what I like about the idea.

I guess you are looking to rebuild the engine very often if the car is driven hard.

Does not make any sense for a street vehicle. Either that or you are looking at an engine like the S2000's engine that has a high redline but granades when driven hard for long periods of time.

Ken

BTW: Anyone who is thinking about a V10 or V12, needs to keep in mind the cost of ownership and maintainance of such engines.

Of course, I would also love to see Honda going fighting in the 400-500hp territory but it would not be very wise. In 2008 we will see a F430 successor from Ferrari and in 2011 another ... going V12 and 600hp ... and 300k$! There is no when you have rich customers backing you up...

Honda should evolve the NSX and "fight" in the 911 class, a 380hp light car would do the job but please release it before end 2006. Priced below 75k. And a facelift/successor with some additional hp and features planned every 3-4 years...

Honda has to pin down who a new NSX's competition is. It is definitely possible to challenge Ferrari but then these silly ideas about < $100K price tags have got to go. If Ford can do it, so can Honda.

I agree with Gheba that Honda's best bet is to continue the segment they had in the 95-00 timeframe: line the NSX up against the 911, Viper and (sadly) C6. The 911 can have the higher price for the Porsche logo, Honda will have to be more price-competitive than that but it could probably do well in he $60-70K niche. Gotta undercut the 997S on price and match (or better) its performance. They will never outrun the Viper or out-value the C6.

Ahhhh, yes....another concept. The problem is that none of these concept cars are anything we can actually buy. I wish Honda would stop dragging their feet and give us something tangible rather than drag the car on for an estimated 18 year run, according to this new 2008 date.
