New Ferrari 488 GTB Raises the Bar Again

Got to drive a 458 on track this weekend. Wow! What an absolutely incredible machine. Car was very communicative and the engine is glorious. Transmission is silk on the upshift and sounds violent on the down shifts. The sound made everyone giddy. The 488 may/will be faster but who cares, the the 458 is near perfection.

That said, I drove the Huracán too. I think it's even a little better than the 458 (and I'm more of a Ferrari guy).

driven both flat out many times each. the 458 is still the king. that car IS perfection...

What's interesting about the 488-GTB is that it looks much better in-pictures than in-person, IMVHO. I saw it in Geneve and then in NYC. The 458, even with its oddities, is more sculpted-looking sheet-metal and muscular; whereas the 488 is almost molded-plastic'y in person. Ferrari softened the lines and facets on the 458 for the 488, while adding the necessary tutbo+aero attributes.

With that said, market-segment niches seemed to have been established...

Wild-card segment primed for poaching:
Vantage, California-T, AMG-GT, Continental-GT

Entry exotica:
570S, NSX-v2.0, R8-V10, 911s (GT3/Turbo, RS)

Mid exotica:
650S, 488-GTB, Huracan

Hyper exotica:
P1, LaF, 918, Agera, Huayra

the 488 IS better looking, that said I think the 458 speciale is going to go up in value now as the last of the great NA ferrari V8s.

Man, I don't know. I think the 458 is gorgeous. Used Speciales are around 400k used and 299k new…and I think it's just for the reason you mention.

there's physical attributes of both cars I like. if I could take the best of both the 458 and 488 and put them into one car, I don't think any motor car could ever be prettier.

the 488 will certainly be a better car than the 458, but the Speciale may well be the keeper of all time, as previously stated.

either way, I'd be immensely happy with either a base 458, Speciale, or 488. for under Hypercar (918, P1, LaFerrari) money, there's just nothing as visceral or brilliant as those mid-engined magic cars. now that gently used 458's have recently hit the $199,000 number, you can realistically add that to new NSX competition. a secondhand 458 with 1,500 miles for roughly the same price, I know a lot of people who'll buy the red car with the prancing horse on it...

Agera is no longer made. Ksegg makes the One:1 and the unbelievable Regera hybrid, a car sans a transmission.

Agera RS is still orderable. Seen all 3 variants somewhat recently, largely indifferentiable... other than the power, good lawd almighty!

Keanu Reeves Drives 488 GTB

He has been known to be a car and motorcycle guy.

From the article:
It’s not just the specifics of any Prancing Horse that stand out, but also the way Ferrari handles its customers. They have a special something put aside for every single sportscar buyer; it’s a culture they build around fast, luxury and classy autos. That is why when a Hollywood A-lister like Keanu Reeves visits the Italians’ headquarter he’ll spend the day.

Here it is:

Cool video, but it sure doesn't sound better than a 458. Not even close. My nsx sounds better.

fantastic video. hard to make an opinion on the engine sound from a recorded cockpit video however, but having spent a lot of
time in 458's it doesn't sound far off at all, if any. it sounds pretty damn good from what i can hear.

i remember saying myself that i didn't know how Ferrari could possibly improve on the 458, but it appears they have in a
massive way. which is absolutely mind boggling to me. that's what you have to admire and love about Ferrari. they build
incredible machines with unbridled passion and without compromise. i'm dying to drive that thing...

p.s. no offense, but unless you have a Ferrari engine in your NSX, i can't imagine it sounding better?

I tend to agree that the 458 is no 355, but then I think the 355 is the greatest sounding car ever. Just can't bring myself to buy one. At one point in the video, I'm sure CH said that the 488 sounds better than the 458.

My issue with the car is that although I initially thought it was possibly the best looking car I've seen in years, I have since seem some pictures where I thought it looked ugly, all created nearly entirely by the rear quarter.

Did someone say sound...

I agree with you on that detail. The splitter treatment on the side intake and front bumper buck tooth splittter are poorly done IMO. The rear fascia of the 488 looks tons better tho!

Also I think it's hard to judge the sound of car from in cabin video. I bet it'll sounds even better with a properly tuned free-flow exhaust. The 458 aftermarket exhausts make it sound awesome if there is anything to go by.
