I posted this in general but didn't get any reply. This is starting to trouble me a bit.

Anyway, I got my timing belt/60k service done and afterwards my throttle feels very weird. Basically the gas pedal has way too much play after it reaches full throttle. I would say there's about 1/2" or more that I can push down the pedal after the throttle body is completely open. It was not like this at all before the service. They did drop the engine for the service but I don't know why this would happen. I did take it back to the dealer and the mechanic tried to adjust it but it didn't help much. I tried adjusting the throttle cable tentioner but it really didn't help much and screwed up my idle instead. So what to do? Is there anyway to adjust the free play in the throttle cable without touching the throttle cable tention adjuster?? Help is much appreciated....

I’m assuming you have a ’91 style throttle…the throttle cable is removed from the throttle for engine removal, removing the throttle cable can and probably will mess up the original setting and the cable will need to be readjusted according to the service manual. I guess I don’t quite understand how there can be more “push” to the pedal once it is in its max open position—is the cable flexing? Maybe the cable is not installed properly to the throttle? I’d look over page 11-113 of the service manual and go through the steps to see if your cable is adjusted properly.

Good luck,

I'm suspecting incorrectly installed cable also. Basically, the gas pedal reaches full throttle before it hits the floor and from there, the cable jsut stretches it seems. Will look into this tonight. thanks

ak,

There are TWO brackets for the throttle cable. One is located on the plastic cover on the right side of the engine and one is mounted to a bolt that holds the cooling fan on the right(to the body).

Make sure you see how they ran it. It should have no kinks and the body bracket would limit any "flex".

I would check to make sure there is nothing bent around the throttle body area. Maybe when they lowered the motor they forgot to disconnect the cable and tweeked something. I don't know why anyone would drop the engine to do that job it's not necessary. and seems like it would take alot more time. The throttle cable adjustment is pretty straight forward on any Acura they all pretty much adjust the same way.

Hey guys. Thanks for the response. I took off the intake manifold cover to see if there are any kinks underneath and there doesn't seem to be one.

The thing is, my throttle cable is pretty loose at the throttle already but it seems to need another 1/4" of play. If I put the throttle cable adjusting nut all the way to the right(most loose) my pedal goes all the way to the floor and feels fine, but of course, the cable would be too loose. I think i'll take it off all over again and see what happens.

In the mean time though, how much play on the gas pedal do you guys have after reaching full throttle? I can just about fit a finger underneath the pedal...

ak,

One thing you may wish to check is that the cable sheath, where it goes into the body (firewall) is mounted properly. This is a cable inside a sheath, and it sounds like the sheath is not stationary. So the cable appears too long. I have seen this in many cars upon reassembly when a large grommet, most times in the firewall, is out of place (pushed in improperly)
