Hey guys, does anyone know the part number for the idler/tension pulley assembly (bracket and bearing)
It's on the Service Manual page 6-21 and the bottom center of the page, I need the part number for that assembly, thanks.

Also, is this something I could remove/replace myself? Looks like I can get to it, but I don't want to mess up anything else in the process.

Thanks guys, the problem is the car has an extremely high pitched whine, almost sounds like my car is supercharged
But seriously, it's a very obvious whine that is constantly increasing with RPM's. You can hear it at idle and when you accelerate there is more noise.

I did put a metal rod on various parts of the engine where the sound appeared to be coming from (with the other end of the rod held next to my ear), and the idler pulley assembly definitely seems to be the problem. I think the bearing in that assembly has gone bad. I just assumed it was sold as an entire assembly. I have stopped driving the car as to not cause anymore damage.

Ofcourse, if anyone has any other ideas feel free to chime in.

I would take off the alt. belt and run the engine if you still have the whine then take off the ac belt and test run again and see if the noise goes away. I bad bearings normally don't make a high pitched whine, grinding and rumbling noises are much more common. My guess is your Alt. is making the noise but worse case just buy some cheese to go with the whine

If it still whines after you remove the alternator belt, then it is the idler, and it will stop whining when you remove the A/C belt :). The pulley itself is P/N 38942-PR7-A00 and list price is $74.40.

As Brian mentioned, it is tight in there, in fact you cannot remove the idler pulley "assembly" without tipping the drivetrain upward on the engine side, the same as you would to replace the timing belt with the engine in the car. You can review page 6-24 of the on-line service manual a pic of tilting the engine upward.

If you can just replace the pulley by removing the 14mm nut it is possible to do it by just removing the pulley alone (that is the part number I referenced above, just the pulley.)

Hi Brian,

The problem I have had is that the bolts that hold the complete assembly on are really long (about 4") since they go through the timing cover all the way to the block, maybe you can sneak them out, but I have had no luck:). The pulley alone, no problem.

Thanks guys, I got this part in today and replaced it. It is a tight working area but I got it done and it solved the problem.
