NASA, Coz, & Chuckwalla...the perfect weekend

I just experienced the most amazing two days I have ever had with my NSX. I had previously had two days of instruction at Spring Mountain at the NSXPO in Vegas, and since then spent about 10 days at my local track, Chuckwalla Valley Raceway.

With Coz’s encouragement I joined NASA and went to the NASA-AZ event that they held this past weekend at no other than…Chuckwalla Valley Raceway. Wow. My car, my track, professional instruction. Never having been at a NASA event before, my friend Patty and I were quickly welcomed by NASA staff, instructors and other members. Everyone was simply so friendly, helpful, and importantly, encouraging.

With Jim’s instruction and direction, I moved from HPDE 1 to HPDE 3 in two days. I am a guppy in the Ocean of HPDE 3, but without Jim’s instruction to unlock the talent I had, who knows how long it may have taken. All but one of my classmates were able to at a minimum progress to HPDE 2 and another one moved to HPDE 3 before I did. This wasn’t a freebie upgrade to get rid of students; it was filled with check-rides from other instructors and final sign-offs from the group you were moving into. Jim watched and instructed me in the car, many of the other available instructors watched trackside, so I had NASA staff that I had never met until that moment come up to me and say “you’re doing really well out there, keep it going”. NASA is an organization I’m now very proud to be member of. The credit to this goes to the entire NASA-AZ org, not simply Jim. He had a tough weekend as described here, but he still took generous time to guide me and later Patty around the track.

I learned a very important fact from Jim that most of you guys probably have known for many years:

You go smooth to go fast.

In HPDE 2 I was reeling in a Porsche GT3, BMW M3, Nissan 350Z and a Mustang GT in like a professional fisherman. I wasn’t trying to catch them. I was driving MY car not THEIRS. I was USING momentum instead of wrestling with it. Next thing you know the gaps just fall, and I’m waiting for the point-to-pass so I can move along. I do, and will always have very much to learn. This was very simply proven as I easily expected (and then experienced) when I was the one doing the point-by and was probably passed by almost every big-bore car in HPDE 3, including what I think was an Alfa Romeo 33, that I was waiting to belch out a plume of smoke and explode at any moment, as Alfa’s are prone to do.

I’ll finish this book of a post by saying one last bit. I love my NSX. It’s why I bought one, it’s why I like Prime and the community we have. I can say that I have never loved my NSX as much as have this weekend. I’ve done suspension mods over the past few years to make a difference, and now I can drive the car well enough to really leverage and experience the difference my upgrades have made. As I left for work this morning I walked by my baby, wheels black with brake dust, track dirt on her, I laid my hand on the roof and smiled. I think she smiled back and sighed, “finally…”

Nick, it was an absolute pleasure having you as my student and of course you being out there with us as NASA-AZ.

Once we corrected a few things you were doing and not doing, you progressed in a manner I was very proud of as a student.

You are absolutely correct, you're advancement into DE3 was not a freebie by any means. None of our students ever get advancement freebies, you earn what level you drive in or you don't advance with us.

As your instructor in DE1 and you're asst group leader in DE2, I had the pleasure of staying with you until I thought enough of your newly acquired skills to authorize your check ride into DE3. You went out in DE3 for that check ride and I watched like a mother hen :-) and yes, even though you were amazed at the speed of DE3, you handled it like you belonged out there. Your skills will no doubt continue to improve and you will continue to advance as time goes by and you get more seat time.

You did it Nick, not me. If it wasn't in you to begin with, it never would have happen as quick as it did.

I received many compliments from other instructors and drivers how quickly you progressed on track during instruction, group meetings and downloads. Robert Rose, your new DE3 group leader was very impressed how far you improved over the weekend, otherwise I can assure you, you would have never got into DE3 so quick.

We as instructors and those of us that act in the capacity as group leaders continually watch all students as they progress. Tim, who did your check ride into DE3 was also very pleased with your ability and newly acquired skills.

When your ready for DE 4, I'll do your check ride this time :-)

I know you'll be coming to more of our events and as I told you, I will always welcome the opportunity to continue to ride with and coach you whenever you ask. Any of us will.

Patty was also very impressive, not quite ready for the speed of DE3 yet, but her skills and smoothness were impressive. I look forward to continuing to work with Patty in the future as well.

I hope to see you and Patty in March at our major NASA-AZ Night Event.

Great job Nick !

I saw the silver NSX and never got a change to meet you Nick!

Next time!

Ravi,

My bad...I was the bald guy who came up to you as you were switching the settings for your sway bars and we both gave grief to your mechanic who spun your baby! I'm so sorry I didn't formally introduce myself to you. You are an awesome driver like Jim. I had the great pleasure of watching you tear up the track with an NA NSX like I own. I can only aspire to be as good as you someday.

I'll see you and Jim in AZ on March 31!

You'll do fine Regan, I've already tracked with you privately and have faith in you :-)

March 31st !...make plans to attend !

We might just have to start our very own NSX paddock area :-)

Thanks for sharing your experience. I hope to make the next one. I'll be lucky if I get up to 2 :)

Nick,

Ravi is also an NASA instructor. Next time you're at one of our events, ask him to go out with you, take you out for a ride along or both.

There's a lot of knowledge and experience to be gained from Ravi, not to mention a great person to spend time with.

ohhhh!!! lol

Ok yeah he went out later and was having more fun but definitely has a better understanding of the car now :)

We DEFINITELY got faster towards the end of the day!

N/A is the way for me. Mainly because I don't have the budget for FI
:) But I try to get it done regardless! I hope to formally meet you at a future event!

Up in the air for me, probably not.
Have a lot of work to do in the next 30 days to the car, motor, some aero, tuning and testing to get done before taking it out on track again.

I'm gearing up for the NASA-AZ Night event March 31st. which is a 16 hour event with 8 TT sessions on 2 different tracks and the UMS TA.
This event is to important to miss points wise.

Will anyone be attending this event?

Congrats Nick!

Its nice to read that you are enjoying your NSX! I have considered doing some track days myself at Chuckwalla on my bike...

Smooth = Fast!

I was initially planning on going, but the cost is going to be astronomical to get out there and back, and with it being basically back to back with Chuckwalla, I may have to pass.
Bummer for me gents but certainly understandable. This is a local event for me so the logistics makes it an easier decision.

The entry fee alone is double the cost of Chuckwalla, then figure in about 400 in gas to tow, and then any gas used in LA, plus time off work and tires/brakes. I'd say its an easy 1000 dollar weekend for an AZ'er :)

I'm not doing Fontana either. It's a mere 20 minutes from my house, but I'm a NO on Rovals...:frown:

Regan, if you're willing to come a bit farther, Patty and I are going back to Chuckwalla on Feb 26th. It'd be great to see you!

Man I miss PIR's roval. Was a blast! I was looking forward to Fontana but its just not financially smart for me at this time lol.

+1....money better spent on the car than going to this event.

I'll start working on Mark to put something together.
If nothing else, maybe you can make it out for a members day when we go.

I'm still hoping for a Dali SMMR event this summer but looks like a slim of that this year :frown:

Chuckwalla is a great track, and I have driven it in the NSX, and the S2000 (now sold). You don't get much track time at NASA events though.

If you want more seat time at Chuckwalla, try an open track weekend with www.starcarsports.com -- the track is open for 6 hours (9:00 am to 12:00 noon) and 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. There are only 2 run groups, alternating in 1/2 hour sessions. One is an open passing group, and the other is passing anywhere on track with point-by required.

The best part -- you can run in both groups all day long if you want. Just follow the passing rules of the group that's on track. These are really great events.

We, NASA-AZ will be back at CW Dec 1 & 2.

I'll most likely take advantage of one of these starcarsports events for a day myself to make up for the time I didn't get when we were there, before NASA-AZ goes back in Dec.

Thanks for the tip Richard.
