A group that Ive tracked with at Mosport before is holding a day on May 8th.

These are very well run, very controlled, and VERY high mileage days. If you are up for it, you can get well over 400km on the track (GP Track).

I usually duck out of the last session due to fatigue.

There will be about 10 instructors there.

Marshals, ambulance and everything else, including lunch.

There will be about 30 cars.

about $400 each.

I am going. Anyone else interested?

I'm probably in! Just need to check timing closer to the date - I have a few comitments early May, but otherwise YES!

I may be in my new 944T by then!

Thought I'd mention the SABATO track day on May 10th. It's open track format similar to Dexter track days. Haven't received confirmation on their 2006 track fees. Last year the fees were $400/day which includes complementary continental breakfast (coffee, juice, muffins, fruit, etc), a speculator gourmet lunch (catered - not the crap served from on-site grease pit) and a happy hour (with even more food) after the track closes. If you're on a diet, you might want to pass on this one. Same track rules as your typical club (BMW, PCA, etc) schools. For more info, contact the person below.

No problem. Just let me know when it arrives.

I've stripped all the leather off of the interior of my car as part of my interior "refresh program"!

Hey SPA, would i be able to arrive and drive for the 8th at Mosport with $400?

I dont know. If it is full, no. My thought is that an early track day is probably going to fill. Ill try to find out for you tho.

He only allows about 30 cars in for the day (hence the price).

never been on a track before but would definitely like to - few questions though

1. Do you need any experience on a track before you go to that one ?

2. Any risk of damaging your car - hate to damage an NSX - your fault or other driver's ?

3. When my wife hears the word track / high speed - she always thinks something bad will happen - how safe / unsafe it is as I will have to do a lot of explaining to her

4. Anything else I should know/do before I decide to go that route ??

Thanks

No - there are always novice groups and all novices will have an instructor in their cars at all times.

Yep - both.
It not common, but it is not unusual, for a car to suffer severe damage during one of these days. You can reduce the liklihood greatly by choosing which days you drive on and drive in a very controlled manner, but shit luck can happen; you can blow a tire, have a deer run across in front of you, make a gross error, blah blah blah...You can never say that there is no risk...but you can reduce it greatly by being smart.

If you and the cars around you are very controlled and your car is in proper condition, I say that from a safety perspective, I dont believe it is sufficiently more dangerous then driving down the DVP or whatever. That said, financially it could be considerably more painful then an accident on the DVP.

Id check the wording of your insurance policy and I would make sure that the car is in proper order before you go.

Id also get prepared to go again and again and again and again and again.....

You may want to give the F2000 school on the development track at Mosport a go. Insane fun in insane cars, but in a very safe and controlled environment. Someone elses car. You can get a feel for if you like track driving there and the instructor (Hugo) is amazing. Not cheap tho.

Thanks for the response

I would like to know if I could use a track with an instructor or without by myself just to get it out of my system - I don't think I am ready to assume a mistake by another driver that will damage my NSX in any way - Riding a motor bike for 6 years has taught me a lot - and the main thing was to sell the bike due to other bad drivers around you

On a well controlled day, you should not have a problem with other people on the track. Most of the days that I go to stagger the cars by about 15sec to begin, so you are probably going a few laps before you even see anyone. Ive been out for sessions that were well matched and I NEVER saw anyone! When and if you come across another car, the rules on the days that I usually attend keep the cars a safe distance apart until the ONE passing zone. At that point, the slow car slows to the right, signals with the signal AND points. Ive never been divebombed and Ive never encountered someone pushing me too hard from the ass. But I have been stuck behind slower cars waiting for the passing zone.

But I am careful which days I go to.

I dont think you want to go out on Mosport for the first few days without an instructor. It is not about teaching you to drive, its a matter of teaching you what lines result in death. Take the wrong line too fast on that track and your day will be over before you know it. There are offcamber, blind, double apex corners that will crush you.

I agree with Dave!

A well run day is safe (except you may push yourself too hard, drive tired, etc.) The trick is to start small and humble before you get yourself into the F1 car against Michael S. The most dangerous thing on the track to you is your attitude!

And you MUST have an GOOD instructor in your car - I wouldn't learn as much without one, so as long as they are a better driver than me, and I'm not racing, I'll always take one with me!

I'd actually recommend the Hanson GTR days. His dad is the guy who is Head Instructor at Ferrari School, set up the BMW school and Saab school, etc. (Peter (the Son) is also the BMW champion something like 4 years in a row, he's won the GT class at the 24 Hrs at Daytona, etc.) - These guys know this stuff!!!! And they can attract the best instructors.

Each day is $250 and its at the Mosport Driver Development Track (Which I'd recommend for significantly less risk and easier learning - but tonnes of fun)

Dates are: Fri April 14th
Friday Sept 15th
Friday Nov 17th (perhaps the most fun since the car isn't as sticky in the cold!)

If you want to go, email me (I'll be at all of them) and I'll send you the package! I assume Rui (GreatWhiteNorth) will be there instructing - last November he got in Daria's NSX and blasted off some amazing laps.

Yeah - the DDT would be a good idea.

It IS fun in F2000 cars. Fun in the NSX Stu? Maybe Ill go. It would be great for lower speed car control stuff, just not sure about the holes on the insides of the corners. THey still there?

Fun in the NSX even if you're a good drive because you can let it get a little loose with no risks. The corners were fine - no wheel eating crap to be seen.

Lots of corners, so lots of handling, less speed since limited straights - we ran the course backwards which is faster and fun.

NSX7 - WARNING! These events are popular and book up relatively quick (if put on by someone famous - as in: not me!) Book now, start gettign your gear together and your mind around it - April 14th is just a few weeks away!

(You'll need a helmet, get your brakefluid done, tech your car...you barely have enough time if you sign up now! )

There is a lot to be said for lower risk track driving.

At the end of a big track day, I have always, and I mean always, breathed a big sigh of relief that Ive made it through without incident.

Wish I had space for a track car!

I doubt very much I can make the April one - my car needs brakes for sure and I am still sourcing where to get them - OEM is such a rip off

brake fluid ?? what's the deal with that ??

Ba! You can get brakes quickly. I need them too after the beatings mine have taken on the big track late last year.

The shudder was rediculus.

I need pads/rotors/fluids and lines.

Brakes and brake fluids:

1) Brake fluid is as important as brakes! Two things can happen:

a) fluid has "bubbles" in it and therefore doesn't "crush down" equally (what happens when you press the brakes, your crushing a hydraulic cylinder which pushes the fluid out to the calipers causing them to compress on the disks) the bubbles themselves compress so the effect is to prevent even distribution of the braking force to all calipers at the same time.

Now, all of this said: I understand that the NSX is self bleeding (bleeding the air out of the system) - but I wouldn't want to trust that completely!

b) The fluid ages especially when it is heated by compression (like everything else in physiscs) and slowly looses its properties associated with compressing equally - so you need to change it with new fluid. A quick check by someone knowledgeable is all you need - $50 tops.

2) Brakes: I was reading a site where the guy has tried all sorts of NSX stock and non stock brakes and rotors for actual racing. Overall, he concluded that short of upsizing to serious Brembo racing gear stock was the best in terms of feel, longevity and value.

I am planning on learning how to do my own brakes, anyone interested lets talk - I'll schedule our mechanic to come to my house and teach us! (Not only knocks off price, but lets you do it more often!)

Stu - I definately want in on that brake speak.

I see growing garage time in my future and I dont just mean the times Im kicked out of the house.

:D

Guys - Im thinking about doing my garage floor with racedeck tiles.

Anyone else interested?

Cost is about $4/sqft. You can easily install it yourself.

Wondering if we can drum up enough interest, if we can get a group buy going.

My garage looks like crap. Not worthy of the car. That has to change.
