Mom in San Francisco throws her 3 kids in the bay??

This is a really sad tale to be sure. However, on this very forum we are already seeing people blaming the "system".

Where does it say in the Constitution that the U.S. government is supposed to psychoanalyze young mothers to ensure they are not insane?

This kind of thing is terrible but it happens. Bad things happen. People always try to look back at the causes so as to gain some sort of insight as to why it happened (and then perhaps try to prevent it?). Unfortunately, not all bad things can be prevented. There is no perfect system. Furthermore, family members and loved ones of these troubled peope should not be expected to prevent all of this either.

I think it is just part of life, and I think it happened in the past as well. There just was'nt 24-7 news coverage and the internet to spread the bad news as efficiently.

The only people I am really angry at are the cowards who stood on the edge of the pier and dialed 911 while those kids drowned to death.

i hear that in America, that if you dive in to rescue a victim, and the victim eventually dies, YOU ARE HELD RESPONSIBLE. maybe this is why nobody bothers helping?

isn't there a Good Samritan Act in US? In canada, as long as you didn't neglect the victim, you won't be held responsible for the victim's death.

however, I am a certified lifeguard, so if i don't dive in to help, I could be held responsible. If the victim dies, I could be held responsible as well.

One concern that I have is that people are not looking at the fact that this parent was....lets see...23 years old....BROKE...and had 3 kids. WTF?? I know this is not PC, but I really cannot help it....I am sick of seeing people that cannot afford to raise a child right have a whole car load of them and then the kids either end up dead, abused, or having to be supported by our tax dollars as the 'parents' collect welfare while sitting at home eating Cheeto's. Yes, I know there are some good parents out there that just need the help, and those are the people the system is supposed to help...but THOSE parents are usually not the ones on the news killing their own kids and then dodging responsibility.

Pardon my rant....

As far as I know, you're correct in that there is no "Good Samaritan" acts in the United States. However, it is exceedingly rare that one would be held responsible. Unless it could be shown that you intentionally caused more harm to the "victim" by your actions, you wouldn't be held accountable.

However, IANAL, and this post is worth exactly what you paid for it.

Mitch, I think your opinion is held by many. I think in many ways social programs are started with good intentions. Unfortunately, the results are typically bad as this enables people to sort of stagnate. They have no job skills or motivation and they end up completely dependant on the government.

To Flaminio's point, that is why you saw what you did in New Orleans. Many of these folks are no longer self reliant as a result of being brought up depending on someone else (govt) to take care of them. What happened when the government was overwhelmed in New Orleans? Chaos.

With that said, I do not necessarily think this was the case with this insane woman who tossed her kids in to the Bay. This woman was flat out deranged.

I think it is one thing to blame the system when a child is consistently beat, the authorities recognize it, and then the child later dies as a result of one of these beatings. However, in this case, how could you have known that her mental illness would result in her murdering her children? Do we allow some governmental entity decide this?

There was a case in Texas not long ago where a seemingly normal woman cut off her baby's arms and let it bleed to death. She then casually called 911 to let them know what she did (with a completely flat, non-emotional tone).

The way I look at it is this. The brain is an organ just like the liver. Sometimes the liver goes haywire and causes a disruption in the system. Unfortunately, when the brain goes haywire, there can be nasty results. This is just my opinion though.
