Okay...so i just saw on television that some sicko Mom threw her 3 kids in the San Francisco Bay?? I cannot wait to hear how many people say she is not responsible for this....

This is one of the most sickening things I have ever heard of. When things like this happen it always comes out that a lot of people had early warning and turned the other way. Serious mental illness can produce unexplainable and horrendous results and we need to all have our eyes open for those who can no longer think rationally on their own. Already it has come out that the woman was on medication for schizophrenia, living in a shelter, and had been perhaps tried to be hospitalized by her family (*we shall see if this is true and I tend to doubt it or why would she be living in a shelter).

In cases like this, regardless of the family ignorance, protective services HAS to act in behalf of the children and get them the heck away from parents that might well do them harm. Unfortunately - our society leans much more heavily on the side of Government not getting involved in the Parent / Child relationship then acting quickly in behalf of the children.

If we can raise awareness and action to protect children then those poor kids won't have died in vein.

CPS is no better in most cases. The government simply isn't competent enough to handle situations like these. Let's not go overboard on the hindsight analyses until we have more facts.

This is exactly what I am disscussing in my English class: neglectful parents. PLEASE someone find a link for me..I need my sleep for my 5:45 wake up call for the 6:30 school bus for my 7:15 class....Ya, I start early.

Here is the link: http://kron4.com/Global/story.asp?S=4008735
This is a very, very sad story.
Summary:
Mother: 23 year old: Laushan T. Harris of Oakland. No priors.
Three kids: Ages: 16 months, three y/o and six y/o
Mother undressed kids and threw them - 10 ft drop - into Bay at Pier 7 in SF.
Body of three year old found late Wednesday. Other bodies not found yet.
Mother says "voices" told her to do it. She told relatives that she was going to feed the kids to sharks, but nobody took her seriously.
She is now in custody in a "safety cell" (don't know what that means)
The temperature in the bay this time of year is 50-55 deg. F, so its reasonable to expect that the two other children perished shortly after being thrown into the water.

Very sad :frown: :frown:

What was the name of that women's group in Texas that immediately stepped in and took up for the woman in Texas who killed her 5 kids or something like that? You can bet your ass they're already preparing to do the same thing in this incident.

Is there a link to the story ?

How old were the kids ?

Not sure of the age, but they were still in the stroller, so they could not be that old. :frown:

They showed a clip of the Mom's cousins and she was saying how the Mom is a great Mom and all of this other crap about how she is not 'that kind' of person to hurt her kids. HELLO!! She just threw them in the bay and killed them, so obviously she IS THAT KIND of person!!

The world is getting a little scary these days. I am curious how often this stuff happened a hundred years ago and we just did not know about it. My son is the best thing in the world and I could not fathom something like this. He had his first pony ride last weekend and walking with him and seeing him smile has made me so happy for the past week I can't put it into words. When people go and commit crimes like this it makes my heart ache. :frown:

I agree and would kill or die in a NY second for any of my kids. That said, if this person is as sick as I suspect she is - there will be no justice in the typical sense and the demons that haunt and talk in her mind will never stop. For someone this sick - the death penalty is a welcome blessing and not a punishment.

I thank God I am wired correctly, have family that cares for me and keeps an eye on each other, and pray we may some day better understand the mind and serious mental illness. We have some of that in our family and it is very difficult to get your hands around. Especially if the person lives independently and you need to take legal custody of them as an adult (with kids).

One thing I don't get about this story is that I think there were people around her and these people called the police but no one jumped after the kids, so although the police or fire department responded within 4 min, those kids were gone by then.

Because unfortunately those people that saw it happen were not altruistic.

There is no excuse for this womans behavior and there will now be a waste of our tax dollars used in the investigation, examination, and detention of this woman for the rest of her life.

Unbelievably tragic - words cannot describe how tragic this is.

Clearly she is ill - but those of you who believe that this is something that cannot happen to a seemingly healthy new mother, with NO history of mental illness and NO history of any violence should educate yourselves.

Yes - she needs to be held accountable, but what also needs to be held accountable is the system.

There is no help for families struggling to keep things together with a new child at home. None. I know. We looked for it and got ZERO. The system is one that will let you go a year before providing help. Some dont make it and thus we read stories like the above.

Of COURSE it is something that can happen. New mothers pretend like they're insane all the TIME.

The TRUTH is that women harm kids just as frequently as men do. Men don't have advocacy groups dreaming up insanity defenses for them.

Supposedly she is schizo and had shown MANY signs to doctors/family/shelter staff ... the system as a whole failed those kids.

Disappointing that no one on scene was able to get them out, but who knows the circumstances/terrain.

just sad

Matteni, Beautifully stated.

it's simply a result of the family-unit breakdown... no support system beyond mother.

The Horowitz murder case seems to be taking the bulk of the 'legal' media's attention. Not a whole lot of coverage on this case... :frown:

I'm confused and concerned about this as well. Apparently, people saw her do it because they called 911 on their cell phones. But then they just went about their business, as the kids gurgled and drowned?

If I may get a little Libertarian on y'all -- this is the same sort of behavior that went on in post-Katrina New Orleans, in a microcosm. We have become so accustomed to the nanny state that we have come to expect the state to take care of us at all times -- including rescuing kids out of the bay. Personal responsibility? It no longer exists in the minds of many.

I do hope that I would be the kind of person who would have jumped in and rescued the kids.

This is a really sad tale to be sure. However, on this very forum we are already seeing people blaming the "system".

Where does it say in the Constitution that the U.S. government is supposed to psychoanalyze young mothers to ensure they are not insane?

This kind of thing is terrible but it happens. Bad things happen. People always try to look back at the causes so as to gain some sort of insight as to why it happened (and then perhaps try to prevent it?). Unfortunately, not all bad things can be prevented. There is no perfect system. Furthermore, family members and loved ones of these troubled peope should not be expected to prevent all of this either.

I think it is just part of life, and I think it happened in the past as well. There just was'nt 24-7 news coverage and the internet to spread the bad news as efficiently.

The only people I am really angry at are the cowards who stood on the edge of the pier and dialed 911 while those kids drowned to death.

speaking of Katrina....please don't get me wrong. im not being racist.

its quite ironic

i don't know if you remember or heard of this but a hiphop station called Hot97
http://www.hot97.com

made up a song about the Tsunami victim's asia. when it was being aired, there was a huge fight between the Black DJs and one asian DJ. The black DJ, claimed that they have the right of speech, and that you(asian chinks) can't stop it.

All at once you could hear the screaming chinks and no one was safe from the wave, little chinamen swept away you could hear god laughing, "swim you b*tches swim"

So now you're screwed, it's the Tsunami
you better run or kiss your ass away, go find your mommy
I just saw her float by, a tree went through her head
and now the children will be sold to child slavery...

Racist Hot 97 Skit Mocking Tsunami Victims

The radio station
Hot 97

I think its all karma. it does exist.

what goes around, comes around.

sorry if this went a little off toppic.
