I done tons of searching on this, but can't find much on it. How many people have done this and how hard is it on a 1997?

I helped a friend convert, there is really nothing complicated about it. First remove the EPS Module under the passenger footwell (reduce weight). Then you swap out the power with the manual steering rack. One thing about the install is when you put the manual steering rack back on, you will need to have the rod ties alignment checked to make sure the wheels are pointing straight when the steering wheel is straight. If you wanted a rough installation procedure let me now and I will try to make one up from my memory/recollections.

Is it possible to mark any of the bolts so it all goes back on straight?

The $100 for an alignment is probably worth it. Would I be right in saying that the connecting rods only effect the toe? If so, it might be possible to do it yourself in your garage. There is no shortage of alignment FAQ out there.

Yes, you are correct that tie rods adjust the toe, and it is definitely worth it to get an alignment, toe set out of spec by just 1/8" can cause major tire wear, toe is the most tire-degrading angle.

I plan on getting an alignment for sure, but just wanted to make sure I could do the swap at home. I only live 3 miles from the dealership so I should be fine going that far with my toe off a bit I would think???

yeah just center the wheels before you start and measure the rods as even as possible when reinstalling and you should be good.
