Maintenance costs and reliability

Considering an 2nd gen NSX, and was wondering about your maintenance costs and reliability experiences -- what's it cost for regular services (or bigger services), and has your car needed to go in for unscheduled work? Thanks!
 
There has been multiple recalls. Oil changes are approximately $500, some dealers are less. There is more work involved in changing oil. Oil changes on front motors every 1-2 years and clutch and trans fluid change every 2-3 years.

The kicker is the valve adjustment which requires engine removed out of chassis like Ferrari and requires 28.3 hours of labor.

Some owners have had their cars bought back for problems that dealers were unable to fix. Sometime you will get various system warnings on dashboard and door handle may not pop in or out. Changing the 12v battery seems to solve that.

OTOH many owners love their cars and have great experience with no issues.

I've had my car for nearly two and a half years, closing in on 29,000km. Total amount I've spent on the car so far is $26,635.79. That includes a lot of items outside of strict maintenance and service, such as track day participation, full body PPF, wheel refinishing(twice), and a few aftermarket bits and baubles. Take those out, and the total cost is $17,202.15.

Breakdown:
-Fuel: $4,706.58 (2,943L averaging 10.3L/100km)
-Insurance: $9,034.09 (roughly $3k per year)
-Parts and Supplies: $4,819.29 if I include everything, $3,349.48 on the essentials. The bulk of that is for the replacement tires ($2,330). That also includes things like motor oil that I stock up on when it goes on sale, so some of that cost hasn't been "used" yet.
-Service: $8075.83, but the bulk of that was for the PPF and wheel refinishing; take that out, and it cost me $112 for tire mounting. I DIY the routine maintenance so far, which has only consisted of two oil/filter changes.

The car has been in the shop twice: once for the three recalls (thermostat, 3rd brake light, gas tanks) and once for various squeaks and rattles. Otherwise, the car has been reliable.

I haven't broken down the cost of the actual oil and filter change, but it is about $100 if you can get the oil on sale. Getting it done at the dealer would cost more.

Olyar15 you are very detailed - thanks for sharing - and seems like very low cost - i have 900 miles on my 2019 that is 2 months old and so far so good. I have had 6 porsches and the reason i love them and why i bought this nsx is partially due to low cost of ownership.
 
New here getting ready to pull the trigger on Gen 2 NSX until I saw the 23 hour labor charge for a valve adjustment! Anybody have this service done and what was the total cost?
Like some others tired of the Porsche gouge if you have an out of warranty service.

I don't think many cars are out of warranty yet, so it's difficult to determine actual service costs. I can tell you with 100% certainty that it cost $36k to replace the oil pumps. That is how much a local dealer got paid by AHM to repair a car with an oil pump failure local to me. That car was ultimately a Lemon buyback because it continued to leak oil.
 
I asked the NSX Specialist

He does not believe anyone has had this service yet.

It may take more hours to accomplish real world (the rates are set by the work being done by Acura in house techs in a clean room with motorized tools in hand. The local shop doing this for the first time could be a slow as we go thing.

At today's shop rates, I would imagine $6K would be a starting point estimate.

My 3 year old car has been doing under 4K miles a year, so it will take me 18 years of ownership to get to the engine out service at this rate. I expect to add cars and will stop commuting in about 6 years, so it may take me over 20 years of ownership to get to this service.

Wait... did I miss something... $30k pump replacements and $20k valve work? WTF!

So if I pick up a 2nd Gen in a year nearing the end of its warranty, should we be very worried? Are these just very rare situations? Would Acura dealership service pick up the cost following warranty so that the cars value doesn’t sink further?

Can someone purchase an Acura extended warranty? Is there such thing?

Ok.. no extended warranties... so is it safe to say we will probably see an enormous flood of 2nd gen cars for sale in the last 3 months of warranty?

Good point ... if those things fail prior to reg scheduled maintenance than I’m assuming Acura would fix for free even if it’s 5 years from now... I would hope...

For me just oil changes. Say $500 each. Recall items went fine - tanks, etc, no issues with those repairs. Easy.
My Acura Link communication module seems to have died. Just need to get that fixed sometime. Maybe with the next oil change this spring.
 
Talked to my tech a while ago about an extended warranty and he mentioned what was covered under the standard warranty:

4yr/50k mile bumper to bumper
6yr/70k mile power train
15yr/150k miles hybrid system, batteries, motors, hard parts, no wires

Wires are not covered under hybrid system warranty. It seems some of the buyback units had wire harness issues.
 
Thanks for all the great feedback in this thread. For the valve adjustment, is it not covered under bumper to bumper or powertrain warranty, but could come up at any time? I googled around, but couldn't find more details.

I assume is related to these lines:

  • Adjust the valves during services A, B, 1, 2, or 3 if
    they are noisy.

Ah thanks, I hadn't seen that mentioned anywhere. Any other cost estimates for large services like spark plug replacements?

oil change on front motors, clutch / trans fluid change ever 2-3 years, really? Is this mileage dependent as some of us drive ours very little. Any source on this info with more detail and cost?
 
Maybe CarMax will start selling these. Their warranties seem to not be so bad (thinking about Doug DeMuro's Range Rover experiences).

Clean record.

w/ low deductibles & rate dependent on bundle w/2 other cars & home. Collector policies same ballpark- agreed value

Quite a bit more $$ than my current '15 991 Turbo.
 
I bought my 2017 NSX in early 2019 with less than 3000km on the clock. It's still under 8000km after a year. I had a brake flush done (CAD$95 for labour plus Castrol SRF supplied by me to the shop) and oil change done (CAD$180). With everything included it's about CAD$450 for the whole year. It wasn't needed, but I wanted to ensure the car was in top shape for my track days for 2019.

I heard about the valve clearance inspection work and that engine removal is required. Luckily it's not needed until 120000km. At 120000km, there's slo fuel filter, spark plugs, intake sound control that need to be replaced for 15hrs of labour. I put in about 5000km a year. It doesn't look like I will need any of that done until 20 years later. Granted the time interval is for 10 years, but still, quite far away for that. Start saving now I guess. ;D

All the other items as shown below seems to be pretty reasonable and standard, and much less than what'd expect for a USD$150k car. I mean based on the maintenance schedule and the mileage that I put in, I only need like one service a year and may be may be a few work hours only.

This is FALSE my total insurance cost is $1500 yr for full coverage $500k etc. Why don't you stop bashing the Gen 2 NSX and get on the Rennlist forum???

This car is less to insure than my previous R8 and Porsches. You have to call and custom add it to your insurance policy because its not a common car or a dime a dozen liks say a 911.
