I am used to crusie around town in a low gears, say 4th or 5th when i am going 25-40mph, some times i feel the nsx is about to die, like not getting enough air, or it feels like its going to stall some times it sounds like its knocking too.. . my friend told me its like that in his s2k, and he normally keeps the revs above 3000 does this happen to you guys?

5th gear at 30 mph? why? ..If I am driving leisurely i would be just thinking about shifting into 3rd at 30 mph..JZ

As a minimum, you need to keep the RPMs above 1500 to 2000. You will probably notice that when the motor begins to stall or "knock" that your RPMs are below 1200. In such a high gear as 4th or 5th, the RPMs and torque are simply too low to maintain even a low speed. 5th gear is appropriate for highway driving at say at least 55 MPH.

By the way, that stalling sensation and knocking is not good for the motor. Don't do that! :wink:

Good advice.

This is true of all manual-transmission cars, not just the NSX.

Correct. Lugging the motor is hard on rod bearings. If you continue to run the motor in a high gear at such a low RPM, you could be in for a spun rod bearing. Not only is the motor not producing enough torque to maintain safe rotation of the crank, but you're also not producing as much oil pressure as you would keeping the motor at a higher RPM (although, I'm not sure what the NSX runs for oil pressures at given RPM when warm).

Great explaination. My father had a 89 Acura Legend he used to lug around in 5th gear all the time and overtime (one year) it developed a loud valve tick and knock that was not repairable.

Don't shift any sooner then what an automatic would shift at.

...except autos upshift anytime you remove throttle load. The things go into top gear at 25.

For casual driving in my 6MT, here's the general guideline I use for shift- points/MPHs:

Please note, little acceleration is used to minimize load on engine.

Up-shifting minimum shift-points/gear
1st -> 2nd, 10-15 MPH
2nd -> 3rd, 25-30 MPH
3rd -> 4th, 35-40 MPH
4th -> 5th, 45-50 MPH
5th -> 6th, 55-60 MPH

Down-shifting minimum shift-points/gear
6th -> 5th, 55-50 MPH
5th -> 4th, 45-40 MPH
4th -> 3rd, 35-30 MPH
3rd -> 2nd, 25-20 MPH
2nd -> 1st, 10-5 MPH

Hmmm. Regardless of whether it's a good idea to run at low RPMs or not, my NSX does NOT knock or sputter at 25 mph in 5th. It's at about 1100 RPM, and while not fast, can easily drive uphill without lugging. Tried it yesterday just for info. Normally I don't drive that slow anyway. :smile:

I drove all my engines with shifting point where the next gear started to rev at 1500 rpms with open throttle. Even 4-cylinder-engines felt very fine. That's how I save fuel. Some of the engine reached 200000 miles and felt like new, i.e. VW Golf. I definitly don't believe that Honda would ever let an engine go into production that has damages driving above 1500 rpms due to oil pressure.

geez, sounds like someone need to trade in the NSX for an automatic Kia :wink:

Honda builds engines that rev for a reason. Use the rpm range to your advantage and enjoy the car the way Honda intended when the made it.

In town, I rarely shift to 4th. I can't even imagine going 25 in 5th.
