Well we just finished up yet another Redline Time Attack Event this time at California Speedway. It was an amazing event with quite a bit of media coverage. During the event we encountered the full range of what Mother Nature has to offer. In the morning we had quite a bit of rain that caused a bit of puddleing on the track. Regardless, our driver Billy Johnson was comfortable with the weather, track conditions, and the car so we sent him out. It was truly amazing to see him on the track in those conditions and passing clumps of cars at a time. One scary point was when the NSX turned into a submersible due to a rather large puddle. It pretty much went over the entire car like a wave! Happy with the set-up we decided to skip the 2nd practice session.
After the 1st competitive session we discovered a crack on the inner liner of our flex pipe. (Not bad for a four year old flex pipe with “real” track abuse) Although, we were down about 150+rwhp we were still confident we could finish well due to the wet conditions and Billy’s driving skill. However, as the 2nd competitive session began, it became clear as day and the track conditions dry. We didn’t think we had a chance to win unless we had the power for the straights since the competition was so high. So we had to improvise by cutting two cans of NOS energy drink and one can of Monster energy drink in half to create a ghetto thermo coupler with some hose clamps. We told Billy he pretty much has maybe one good lap before it lets go again.
After the 2nd session completed we were highly doubtful that we finished in the Top three for the day since Rolex 24 hour driver Safronas in the modified GMG GT2 and a damn fast 300zx was running at the top during practice sessions. Data-logging showed that Billy just got about one and a half gears at full boost and then she couldn’t produce much more than 7psi.
At the awards ceremony, they announced the results for our class. The 3rd place and 2nd place winners had times that was faster than our previous sessions so we pretty much felt that we didn’t win. To our surprise, when the announced 1st we were called to the podium!
As much as we would like to take credit for the win. This was all Billy Johnson and his driving skill. Down over 150rwhp he still managed to beat Safronas in the modified GMG GT2 and the 300zx. Simply amazing. This goes to showcase what even a low boost FX500 with a good driver can do. Great job Billy!
