Hi guys -

I'm wondering if any of you do own or have owned a Porsche 993. A good buddy of mine is looking at what looks to be an excellent example of the car (1995 model with about 75K miles on the clock and all maintenance records) as a daily driver. The car is a 6 speed manual and no accidents.

I've never owned a Porsche but I suspect that they're drivetrains are pretty durable. He's probably going to use the car as a fun daily driver but he's new to being a car nut and has asked for help.

I've directed him to Pelican Parts, Rennlist and 6speedonline but I figure someone here must also have input.

Your thoughts/ideas/suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Other than Vario ram and a few HP due to the addition of it, The 95(993) is the one to have. No OBDII constraints allow him to get a nice performance chip if he desired...

There were some issues with valves and valve guide ticks, but not with all cars.. Don't have to worry about valve adjustments.

If the car is maintained well, your friend will have another 125K miles or so before any major probs... There may be leakage of oil at the Trans/Engine junction, but most don't fix it until it's clutch time.

There is some windshield creeking in some of the cars.
Poesche goodwilled for some people, I don't know if they still do..

They are nice cars. I have 2 friends that use theirs to the fullest no issues at all.

Thanks Len. I'll pass that along. Any other feedback guys/gals.

Great cars. I agree with Len. '95 is a good year. Reliable and durable. Not a real high performance car, but fantastic torque. Great brakes. Interior is a bit spartan and unless it has the sport seats they are underbolstered. It is not a matter of if it will leak oil, but where and how much. I know it is a bit more $, but the TT is quite a bit more enjoyable to drive IMHO.

I know you mentioned that you recommended www.6speedonline.com already....there's a forum there specifically for 993 owners, and I'd bet your friend could get a ton of info that would be very accurate. From an aesthetics standpoint, the 993 is awesome, and a lot of Porschephiles think that design along with being the last air cooled model make it the quintessential 911.

Hi

My brother has a 993 C4 95'. He is pleased with it. But I am amazed of the amount of oil it uses.

He tells me that he has added about 4-5 liter of oil in about 7000km. The dealer that service his car tells him that it is normal to use about 1 liter of oil for every 1000km

I change oil every 7000km on my NSX. I go from the top of the oil checker pin to the bottom of the pin in 7000km and that is probably 1 liter.

Apart from that it is a nice car. Goes about the same as my NSX. More low end power. Maxes out about the same speed on the autobahn.

Here is a picture of my NSX and his C4 in the back.

Regards

One thing about the 911 boxer Air cooled motor, is that the oil also cools it as well. Some of them use more oil than normal. Sometimes it is a leak that is not making itself none. Sometimes they are just running hotter than normal and burning more oil than most..
1 quart every 1000Km is a bit much I would think.
I had a 95 3.6 and a 97 3.6 lir motor and they didn't burn a lot of oil. But I have heard guys saying the same thing Martin has just said...
P-car, if it's not leaking, it's not Full.
