Lexus GS300 vs Acura RL

How are you getting 20 mpg - I've reset the average mileage on the trip computer twice since June - both times the number leveled out at just under 15 mpg over a 3 month period. I talked to the dealer and other owners on tov.net - the general consensus is 15-17 mpg. Are you doing lots of steady (ie, not stop-and-go) highway miles?

I live outside of Seattle and most of my driving is secondary roads not much stop and go - that's what I'm getting. I reserve the lead foot for my NSX........

Actually, I am looking at the GS300 RWD. The price difference right off MSRP is $2000 for the AWD. So that would put me about $49,100.

If that is possible, the question is... Is it worth 4K more than a RL? (assuming I could get the RL for $45.5)

I bet you could get it for 40-42k which would make it an easier decision.

wound up getting a 06 TL.

I think after reading this I am now in the same boat as you.
I was looking at a used RL in about a year but after reading this thread I think it may not meet my requirments:
- > 20 MPG
- Trying to avoid FWD understeer but if the RL is going to handle like a FWD car, might as well get a FWD TL.
- Thought the AWD may make up for the fact that the Power to Weight ratio of the TL is better than the RL 13.5 lbs per horse (TL) to 13.8 lbs per horse (RL).

Thanks for all the replys, you may have just saved me some money:wink:

After driving the RL, I would disagree that it handles like a FWD car. It took the twisties well and did not feel close to as front heavy as my TL. To me, the RL was way ahead from a handling persective and did not have the torque steer of the TL.

The TL "Feels" more powerful even though it has less HP - mostly because it is 500 lbs lighter. I must say that I was dissapointed in the HP and TQ of the RL. The reality is it is about as fast as the TL... it just doesn't feel that way.

Considering how quickly you trade in your cars I would think a GS would be a better choice.

I have driven the RL and TL, and find the RL to have superior handling. It understeers but it doesn't understeer like a typical FWD or the TL.

Personally, if it wasn't for all the electronic Nannies on a GS, I would recommend it over the RL.

If that were possible, then yes. I asked the sales manager about that kind of price and his response was he could get us a used one with 12K or so in that range. Not what I was looking for.

Yeah earlier in this thread I said that the car was FWD and some people stepped up to say that it was AWD ..however if you look at the layout and design of the vehicle it is set up like a FWD car and therefore it drives like one.

But it is still an AWD vehicle though.

RWD GS 300 w/ Navi I was quoted $47,339

This should help your decision

How are you comparing these two cars?

The gs300 starts at 43K.....the rl starts at 49....53 if you want the tech package.

Get the gs430.

I am comparing the GS300 RWD loaded to the RL (without the radar cruise). RL 49,500 GS300 51,500.

The GS430 loaded is $9000 more. Not worth it to me just for a V8.

I really think you should consider the M35 because it KILLS the RL in every way. My father and I were looking for cars for him and test drove many cars. The RL was his front runner, until I told him about the M35 and we drove it. What a great car and it beats the RL in acceleration as well and is less money. (A/C seats, lane changing warning, reverse camera, voice activated NAV like the RL, 13 speaker 5.1 surround that sounds sick, laser cruise that adjusts speed to match car in front, etc.) No comparison really.

We looked at the M35. My wife thought it was OK looking outside, but the interior was terrible. It looks like an ATM inside. We didn't drive it as there was no point.

I am certainly biased, but someone earlier suggested a 5 series...I was looking at the GS 430, but found a used 03, 540 with only 5K miles...no comparison...solid, fast, handles really well, and feels much safer with all the safety and collision stuff...for me, I can easily argue the price of safety, and the GS didn't feel as solid...

just my $.02...Mike

if you can wait a little longer...the new GS350 will be out next year as a 2007 Model.

Just my .02 cents

I had not heard that before. Hmmm... Where can I learn more about that.

Same here. No offense to the person who bought the car, but the exterior of the car was not to my liking (esp the rear tail lights. They make the rear of the car look like it is split into 3rd. 2/3'rds of the tail is the rear lights, 1/3 is the trunk lid).

Then I looked inside and had about the same opinion as NetViper. Wish the car looked better, because the feature set for the price is a leader just like the TL is in the $30k market.

In all honesty, after doing all kinds of shopping, it is VERY hard to beat what the TL offers. We might just end up getting another TL with the NAV this time.

If you check out other RL and TL forums, people are saying the exact same thing. The TL has so much to offer for the price. The price jump from the TL to the RL is pretty extreme and doesn't offer "that" many more features. The RL is definetely a nice car and I'd love to own one, but just like the previous RL, it's in an odd spot - marketing wise. Maybe if the RL had a bigger interior than even an Accord or maybe if it had a little more power people would cosider it.

You'd have to really love the gadgets and "need" SH-AWD to justify it in my opinion. I'd buy the TL with Nav and keep the extra 10-15k.

Nice, but it doesn't look like anyone has a clue when the car is coming stateside. The motor sounds amazing. 315HP! Wow. Sure makes the GS300 3.0 245HP look like crap!

Just got my 06 Tl with navi for $32,700

I did a 32 month lease $1500 down plus inception fees

385/mo

I wish I could have leased thru chase or honda finance but the monthly would have been higher. The nice thing about these two are they cover up to $1500 worth of damage upon return of the vehicle.

I leased thru HANN finacing and they dont have a deductable.

Wow, usually I agree with Netviper's opinions 100%, but couldn't disagree more on this one. The interior is that last thing that I would think would be criticized because it is absolutely stunning in my opinion. I am still trying to see what looks like an ATM though. To each his own I guess, but you should do fine with either car. I like the RL's, but they just don't have as much bang for the buck as the competition unless they discount it a lot up front. Good luck.
