JDM Glass Roof on NSX

I'm pretty sure there was no option in Japan for a "glass top" NSX (like they had with the CR-X). But since I had a spare glass roof off the car, and one on the car, I was making a joke to my friend and saying that I should put it onto my NSX but I doubt it would fit. Well, I just took the measuring tape and ran some rough estimates and physically, the glass roof would fit on the top of the NSX. Contour is almost the same, but obviously the border and pillars would need to be used from the NSX. Now for me actually doing this sort of mod on my car is maybe 1 out of 1000 chance. However, I have worked on a CRX doing the glass top conversion, so I do have an idea of what is involved with cutting the pillars and removing the roof and adding the new one in place. Maybe if I had more money to burn and didn't care about my NSX as much, I would go for the mod after doing a lot more research & taking more measurements & angles. But just wondering if anyone had considered such a mod or a look.

The cool thing about the "JDM glass top" is that it is a nice bronze color on the top, and you cannot see into the car from the outside. But you can easily see the sky from the inside of the car. Also, the sun beating down on you isn't as intense as one might think since the glass is polarized pretty well. Again, not something that most of us would do but just something I was thinking about and after taking the initial rough measurements, as it looks like it could work with the right fabrication work done. Here are some pics of what the glass top actually looks like:

Just food for thought

wouldn't it be much easier and safer to practice doing this to a "T"?

Exactly. Frankly, I was surprised to find out that nobody has done this with a T model. I think the glass option for the roof panel on the Corvette is a great idea that would readily translate to the NSX.

NICE CRX! You are right the JDM glass tops are awesome...and the bronzing color they use is sweet... As far as cutting into an NSX, thats all up to the creavtive mind behind it...Im sure that the roof could be cleanly installed somehow, but I guess the only obstacles to get around would be the gut-wrenching agony caused by cutting into the Aluminum cockpit of the NSX, and also any degradation of the structural design that may be caused. Anyway, cool idea...I always thought it would have been cool if Honda would have made a Glass Targa replacement top.

Anyway, Take Care...

I don't think it would be worth while to test on a coupe just for the fact that a mistake could get quite costly. A Targa on the other hand could be an easy fix if something goes wrong. Hummmm..... you could really be onto something here if it worked out.

I agree. I would like to see one for the T.

I understand the reasoning for using a targa top NSX, because the part is replaceable and the pillars are already reinforced further. However, I own a 91 NSX so I was just going off of what I had work with. If I did have a targa NSX, then I would most likely try to insert/trim the glass into the targa section and if I messed up, not too big of a loss  . However, since I am familiar with cutting the roof off of a US CRX and putting the glass top on, that is the only reason that would remotely consider doing such a thing to my NSX but like somebody mentioned, it's hard to do that to a NSX

is this "glass" really glass?

it would be a shame to cut the center out of a beautiful light weight aluminum roof to replace it with heavy glass..

now if it were acrylic or polycarbonate you would get the desired effect and low weight right?.... would safety, temperature, or security be an issue here?

thoughts please.

Yes, it's real glass. Thick, polarized, bronze-tinted, rare glass. And yes, it's very heavy but it's also very "cool" on the CR-X. If something like this was done on the NSX, you would need to structurally reinforce the pillars. Again, I doubt anyone would ever do this (especially with the hard-to-find CRX glass top roof) but it's just an idea thrown out. Kind of like the C5 vettes or SL Merc's that have that glass top look

Re: pied piper...

How heavy is it? How costly is it? Because I'm in the middle of a rebuild, this is something I could look at. Seriously.
