Is the GT-R an Exotic?

To me, the GT-R is designed to appeal to the PlayStation generation and I think it does that really well. I think it sort of marks the end of the sports car

Wrong!, your assumption again.

See what a group of more matured drivers said about it after driving it, go straight to 3:01 sec into the video::biggrin:

Playstation? sure, but see what Jeremy said about being detached. "It felt mechanical, human, fantastic". Go straight to 4:20sec into the video:

Ibn Rushd's post #21 said it the best.

I guess I'm in the minority when I voted yes. Admittedly it is ugly looking, but it's also hand made, limited production, higher priced (relative to all other Nissan cars) and has a lot of performance. Although I realize everyone has their own personal definition, I looked around and came across this website that has a small article on exotic car definition. I'm sure there are other sites or magazine articles that also have similar definitions and criteria, but the one thing I thought was interesting was the definition of "exotic." Taken from the first paragraph

'The term "exotic" ALONE by definition means, in its purest form, "strikingly strange or unusual".'

I think we can agree, it does look strange and unusual.

So is Shrek and he's not exotic:eek:

I wouldn't say an exotic, I'd say more along the lines of japanese supercar, I consider the NSX to fall into the japanese supercar category as well. Much like the Z06/ZR1 corvette isn't really an exotic, but it's definitely a supercar

IMO an exotic is something that only the absolute filthy rich can afford like a zonda, murcialago, enzo, or other insanely rare cars like that

We have debated what constitutes an exotic car for years. If you are older than say 40 the definition is and was used to describe the groundbreaking design of midengine street cars, that proliferated in the 70's-80's,mostly Italian.By that criterior the gtr is not exotic.

No way.

I say no way to any Porsche that looks like a 911 also.

What about a 959?

My weird logic is that a sports car needs to be limited production is an Exotic. So - No F360/F430 or Gallardo or NSX. Yes - F40, F50, Enzo, Veyron, Mclaren F1, Reventon.

I did that on purpose. I am a human just like everyone else, I have emotions. My initially reaction was "hell yes". However, I did try to put emotion aside and think of car that is closest matched to GT-R and its true competitor, it was 997 Turbo. Therefore, I came up with my conclusion in end of previous post.

I was just kidding around with that man... (hence smiley)

Dude, did Jay busted your little ego? Give the man a break.

I LOVE Jay! Where did this come from?! Im just saying he buys everything. Your point seemed to be "rich/cool guys LOVE it so it MUST be exotic" If that wasnt your point, thats fine. But the fact remains that rich guys buy everything and are fast first movers on trends. The press are LOVING the GT-R, so it becomes every rich car collectors "must have" latest edition. The NSX was similar on release. I dont feel that really counts for anything.

Dude, your post is a classic example of extreme prejudice and full of assumptions. You should calm down and read it over, you are making all NSX owners look bad. It sounds like your ego is bigger than the HK guy you mentioned above, the dude actually could be the most humble guy in the world. Your post is arguably most distasteful post I had ever read on Nsxprime.

You cant be serious! How is this an ego thing? Most distasteful ever on Prime? Come on... I dont see how you are getting that from what I wrote at all.

For what its worth, I have NO ego really (esp not wrapped up in a car). I just know that millionaires OFTEN just accumulate things to show they can (look at Sultan of Brunei) And I dont think the GT-R is an exotic, and (having driven one) I agree with the car mags that say it is "too easy" and "not engaging".

I really would like you to explain how ego comes into play and how this is "distasteful". You're off the deep end on that. Personally, Im not sure I really consider the NSX an "exotic" either (which is what the thread was about right?)

Im sorry if not liking the GT-R offends you. B/c thats how your personal attacks on me after posting a strong dissenting opinion come off.

I tend to agree with you here.. 959 I think looks different enough from the regular 911 that there is no way mistaking them (compared to like GT2 or GT3)

This is such weird debate to me but maybe as you say it's due to age. When the NSX first came out every magazine touted it as the first exotic out of Japan and how the Japanese had joined the prestigious ranks of Ferrari , Lotus and Lamborghini. Two decades later it's up for debate now ..LOL

I've almost all the mags talking about the GTR but although they say it beats almost every exotic they never call it one.

Got a question on the GTRs speed though. In CD's third lightening lap test the Scuderia beat the GTR by a second but going by "Ring" times that doesn't seem possible:confused:

Different tracks suit different cars. When the F430 Scuderia came out, Ferrari said it was faster around the track at Fiorano than the Enzo. Top Gear has run both around their own track, and the Enzo was the faster car there. Could also be differences in car prep, like tires or brake pads. Some of the magazine test cars get used pretty hard.
