3 times in the recent 2 days, the engine has instantly quit as though the key were turned off. So, it does not appear to be a fuel issue. On all three occasions, the car restarts immediately and runs well for another 7-8 miles before doing it again. Does anyone have experience with this one?

Agree it sounds like a worn out ignition switch.
A modest $40 part and relatively easy install.

Thanks to both of you!
My first impulse was to 'jiggle' the key - no response. I will go with the switch replacement regardless. Others' thoughts are also welcome. One of the three failure situations was quite dangerous.

Can you provide guidance regarding a source? Others' thoughts are also welcome. One of the three failure situations was quite dangerous.

This is sure sounding like a main relay............

Why do you state this is not a fuel issue? Do you have constant fuel pressure even when it stalls?

Yea you might as well resolder your main relay. It's easy and free (if you have a soldering iron).

Remember bad solder joints are not the only thing to kill a main relay. I have seen perfect solder connections on every connection in a main relay, and it was still bad. I have had this happen more then once, on both NSX's and other Honda's.

I've found after about 20 years a number of items begin to fail.
The ignition switch, the main relay, the FI relay, the A/C system begins to leak, the A/C compressor fails, the fuel pump fails, the turn signal clicker sticks and more.
The A/C system repair and fuel pump replacement are expensive, but the rest are all simple replacements and relatively inexpensive.
I have done them all over the past two years and highly recommend methodically doing them all before they fail.

It's possible they will fail when you are just driving into the Acura dealer but my experience is they seem to fail when you're on a road trip, at night, and Bubba's 4x4 garage is the only place available.
And Bubba's tow truck can only hook on to the bumper and bend or break a few suspension items on the way.

At NSXPO2009 on the way over the bridge to Canada, I got a call from a member: "my car died on the bridge". I had him reach behind the passenger seat, and punch the rear panel, just behind the passenger headrest. Car started up, he came back over the bridge, and I installed a new main relay, someone luckily had as a spare. He has not had a problem since......

Larry,

Are you going to do a tech session at NSXPO 2014 on the force and angle of the punch?:biggrin:

In a similar vein, I've been able to wake up a non-responding starter/solenoid with a whack from a broomstick. Then there was the repair on someone's dragging front spoiler using duct tape, in a spot that didn't show, that made it through kid's day at The Glen and all the way back home. Hmmm. Perhaps a whole "bizarre temporary NSX repairs" tech session?:rolleyes:

you don't hang a lot from your key chain do you? i only have my car key and a simple light key chain.

My car did not start after driving to home depot last weekend. it will start right away but as soon as Ilet go of the key it will shutdown. i also noticed before that my car would die while driving for a second and immediatelyturn back on all Isee was my RM and speedo gauge drop for a second while driving. My fix was this http://www.nsxprime.com/wiki/Ignition_Switch Try it. .. I fixed mine at home depot parking lot with a hex drive phillips screw driver.

I've had both issues related above with my 92.

Dies momentarily or completely while driving: Main relay. In my case resoldering resolved it. Sometimes it's the relay itself, not its connections.

Starts then stalls when the key is released: this is the classic ignition switch failure, and requires replacement. Cheap, except for the towing.
