How tricky is it to install headers on the 02+ NSX? Trying to plan ahead...

stay tuned guys Im gonna bend this beam and we will see how much weight this thing can take on the motor mount if it can take the full weight of a fork lift in the center then I am sure my cut isn't hurting the intergirty of the beam.

My novice approach to things give me a " think outside the box " outlook on things.

all this fodder is draining my energy could be using it to get stuff done vs. type rebutals all day

and I never said the OP has to do what I do I only expressed what I have done in the past.

I also never said I know everything or have build as many NSX's as you Joe nor do I know half of what you know but I am learning and continue to learn cant fault me for that. I still respect you even thought you throw everything I do and post under the bus every chance you get but thats OK

Ill keep taking pics that you would never do with your NSX.

Back to the OP- virtually all NSX headers require no cutting. Pride, CT, Fujitsubo, GT-One, KSP Eng, Taitec, DC Sports all fit without cutting the beam.

This hacking of the cross-member is not the quality conscious thing to do. I do hope you are not carving up someone's car other than your own in this manner.

That cross-member does more than offer an additional mount for the motor. It also ties and helps fix the side-members and completes the rear cradle component. If you think taking a almost $1000 cross-member and hacking it to fit in a non-designed part is a acceptable repair strategy you need to think again.

you are correct Joe no one should hack up an OEM part to make an aftermarket part fit I agree.

other than the cutting I think the OP can do a header install very easy without cutting

I think the beam in question is subject to two forces.
An up/down force and a fore/aft force.
When braking the engine wants to move forward and the beam has to resist that force.
I suspect the beam also adds a lot of side to side rigidity to the whole rear frame.

The compression and extension forces are dealt with by the top and bottom shape and the welded rim stops the shear forces and ensures the top and bottom half act as one piece.
The fore/aft force will rely on the welded rim to add the resistance to bending of the beam.
When you remove part of the welded rim some amount of the fore/aft up/down strength of the beam will be compromised.
How much?
I don't know.
But best to avoid cutting it if possible.

JD Cross I agree it prob does, but my point is its not weaking it in anyway. if you look at the shape its actually almost square all the way around it has so many bends in the metal this thing could take 10 tons in the center and its not gonna budge, I showed this to my welder ( 65 year old career welder ) and he said " nope this thing will not bend " I asked how much do you think this thing needs to bend?
he said " more than you could pile on it "

I can do more tests to put this cut to rest, I can hook it up to a Ton Gauge and pull it with a forklift and see how many tons it takes to rip the bolt insert out.

I will do more testing this weekend and post some more pics

The beam is probably over engineered to take more stress than it will ever see and the modest amount you've removed is likely irrelevant.

Shawn, please don't stop posting on Prime. I doubt you are capable of quitting anyway, but, if you were, I would miss you.

Some people like to stick with what they know, which is that factory-stock works. (Unless it doesn't for certain parts but never mind that now.) Some people like unmodified cars and consider anything else an abomination.

While modifying structural components must involve some risk, particularly when one does not first calculate the effect, I believe that you have shown in this case that your modification does not likely have an ill effect. Most of what can be said against it is that it's better to buy a header that fits (which seems true) and that cutting factory parts is necessarily bad (which seems dogmatic). Perhaps there is an effect on stiffness (as opposed to strength), which could change the resonant frequency.

though I started off in my frontyard yes that is true. all my work is MINT any NSX's that leave my shop are MINT and fixed, I do everything perfect, and if I cant do it I send the car off to specialists

I think that was his point. You guys jumped all over him and the only justification was that it's bad to modify factory parts. Period. That's a reasonable justification for not modifying a part but I don't think it justifies the posts that were levied against Shawn.

While Shawn's response was characteristically direct, he wasn't met with much reasoned explanation and it sure read, to an outsider ignorant of any history you may have had, that he was the one being attacked and criticized today. I couldn't care less whether the beam should or shouldn't be modified (my headers fit just fine) but I am educated as an engineer and think Shawn (1) provided a helpful response to the OP in that he noted a solution to a potential problem and (2) showed to the best of his ability that his solution doesn't suffer from the defect it was accused of.

You obviously know a tremendous amount about fixing cars and about the NSX. This community benefits from you greatly. But it also benefits greatly from Shawn's knowledge and energy. There was little reason that this thread had to create negative energy but it did and I don't think Shawn is the only reason for that. Are you right that it's better not to trim the beam? Sure, as a matter of principle. A principle that makes sense. But Shawn also appears correct that doing so does not have ill effect other than the fact that one ends up with a modified part.

Appreciate all the insight that everyone has contributed as I'm sure it was all with good intentions...I will take note and say that I have no plans to cut anything, if anything I will sell the headers before even considering this route

With that said, my headers/custom HFC's from Lovefab/Cody got delayed and will be here next Tuesday. It's supposed to be the mother of all headers and surely took long enough as I ordered them back in March. I just hope fitment is perfect and they look/sound as good as it's supposed to. I plan to tackle the install myself and do a time-lapse video to show the work just for fun. My buddy is going to do the video processing so just helping out

I've watched pbassjo attack Shawn like this for the past 2-3 years. To me it just seemed like he was jealous and or threatened by Shawn. I do know this if I lived back east and needed body work for my car I personally would not even consider pbassjo based on the unwarranted attacks. I would stear clear of doing business with him.

Also pbassjo has edited and removed the ridiculous posts he made to try to make him look innocent. If you told me to do what you publicly challenged Shawn to do, i would have done much more then Shawn did. I would not have said anything, it would be time for action
