I was given an offer for my car but the guy is in Kansas and I am in NY. He wants me to ship the car to him but what I can't figure out is how am I going to take care of the payment method? have him send a certified check? if he is willing to do that I don't think he'll trust that I'll ship the car to him. what's the best way? how do you guys do these kind of sales? how do I shipp the title and documents to him along with the car? thanks in advance

I just purchased one from Vancouver WA, it was all done through wire transfers from my bank to his bank account. Just verify with your banker & his. Bottom line is if he is serious about the car he will come through with a deposit. I sent the owner of my current car $1500 when the car was getting service work done as part of the agreement and after I spoke with the Tech on the car. I felt that was reasonable to do since the owner was doing additional work on the car at his cost. At that point, he overnighted title, service history receipts, keys, manuals (etc.) to me. He sent the car through DAS (Dependable Auto Shipping. They use a GPS tracking system and a confirmation of pick-up from his home. Then the pick-up slip was faxed to me with its tracking #. At that time I sent 1/2 of the purcahse price and the remainder of the funds when it got to my home in 5 days. Smooth a glass the whole transaction. Good luck, where is the car going to in Kansas.

I would never, ever let a car, keys or title/MSO leave my posession until I had all of the money. Some sellers may be less paranoid.

As Tom mentioned banks are good at this type of thing. You give the title to your bank and they talk to the sellers bank. The sellers bank wires the money and your bank overnights the title to the sellers bank. Then you load the car on the transport and you are done.

Alternatively, some of the shipping companies will work with the buyer. He can send them a certified check and the driver will deliver it to you when he comes to pick up the car. Do this on a weekday so you can take the check to your bank and have them call the issuing bank to verify that the check is good before the guy gets the car loaded. There are reportedly a lot of counterfeit cashiers / certified checks going around for big-ticket purchases lately so the verification is important.

You can also use an escrow company, but I think either of the above methods are sufficient and they don't cost anything extra or delay your receipt of the money.
