How to know when its time to replace timing belt?

So - the major expense of the timing belt job is the replacement of the water pumps and tensioner bearing? The timing belt changed on mine just before I purchased it in 2002. The car is running fine, but this thread is making me nervous. How far have other owners gone without it failing? I have put about 50K miles on it.

i think we are getting mixed up.

the major expense is the timing belt JOB as a whole.

what that job should include is the wp, tensioner pulley as focus of the replacement since very rarely does the tb fail due to age. it usually brakes because either of these 2 parts lock up and burn the belt.

the belt usually is perfectly. i have never seen a tb coming off a nsx frayed or cracking. TB only costs around 140$, once you take it off, you should change it out. your already there, why not?

if i had to choose one of the two between tb or water pump + idler pulley going for a 250k miles . i would choose the TB.

dont get any silly ideas from what i just said tho. change them all out at once.

1700$ is way cheaper than a 10k motor + labor, down time, kicking yourself for the next 5 years and a broken heart.

i hope i never see the day when a fellow nsx owner calls me up about a broken timing belt.

There are garages out there which don't change the WP and tensioner bearing with the TB. I know of at least one exemple.

 I would change the tensioner bearing in any case and if I were a garage the WP as well. But according to my experiences as a DIY a waterpump will last at least roundabout 200k miles (valid for Honda, Mercedes and Porsche ). I have driven a Mercedes 320 to 315k miles with the first engine and WP and it was still working.

I fully agree that a garage service must include WP and tensioner bearing in respect of "better to be safe". (Material is less compared to hours to change...)

In that case you desribe,- did the WP fail due to mileage shortly thereafter?

This is interesting to know for me, because I am just going to change my TB.

By the way, I have never known it to happen that a timing belt from Honda cracked. Even after more than 150k miles. But please don't take this as an advice .

Not yet! I hope for the car/guy it won't but for some reason you usually change it. Killing a 30k engine for a $200 part just because he was too lazy to drain the coolant?

Additional info: This mechanic is convinced of himself to be the best mechanic worldwide and believes himself as the best NSX mechanic in my country.

It's just like RON98 stated. Most garages (who rarely see an NSX) quote 3k for the TB as they argue to dismount the engine (I know it's not necessary). He does it for about 2k of the price and let the engine in. The 3k garages are not better because they're not experienced with the NSX at all.

Ergo: in march we hope to DIY it on deylo's car. Will be pictured.

So I can expect my WP and tensioner to fail soon? They were changed 6 years and 50k miles ago.

Thanks for all the help

No, don't be worried about it. They HAVE been changed 6 years ago, that's good. I would be worried if they weren't changed and are 12-15 years old.
